Holiday during term time

Im attending durham uni this year and stupidly a few months ago I booked a holiday for January (as i wasn't planning to go to university) Now i am going to uni and it falls during term time. Its quite expensive to change the dates and would require me to change my holidays at work. are durham strict with attendance? Like would they question me being off for a week (obviously still doing any assignments that are due) and what would be the best way going to go about this.

Hey! Congrats on getting into Durham, that’s amazing 🎉 I wouldn't worry too much about the holiday booking. Loads of people make plans before uni decisions are final, so you’re definitely not alone there.

Durham does expect students to attend seminars and tutorials, and most departments will take attendance at least for seminars. This can vary department to department and is probably something you will find out when you get here. That said, departments are usually understanding if you communicate clearly and stay on top of your work. If it’s just a week and you’re keeping up with assignments, it’s unlikely to cause major issues.

Best thing to do is let your department or tutor know in advance, as soon as you get settled into Durham and just send a quick message explaining the situation and confirming you’ll catch up on anything missed. They’ll appreciate the heads-up and it shows you’re taking responsibility.

Best of luck with everything at Durham.
