gowned vs non-gowned at Durham University colleges

is it better to go gowned or non-gowned at at Durham college? because I've heard mixed reviews from both sides - if I went non-gowned would I be missing out on anything? I'd like to go to balls and formals and stuff

It sounds like you prefer the gowns. However, you only get to give a ranking to them. As mentioned elsewhere on here the gowned colleges are over-subscribed and allocation is somewhat random. There's a good chance you'll be allocated to a non-gowned college whether you like it or not.

Is it the case with gowned colleges that you have to follow a bearded middle-aged man outside, who wears a berrie and kilt, and carries a sceptre that is lumbered over his shoulder?

Hey, just to reassure you, whether you choose a gowned or non-gowned college at Durham, you won’t miss out on the fun stuff like balls and formals! Gowned colleges have that extra touch of tradition, where you wear academic gowns to formal dinners and ceremonies which can feel really special, almost like stepping into Hogwarts. Non-gowned colleges still host amazing events too, just with a slightly more relaxed dress code. 🙂
