An architecture degree is a design-focused course with around 50% of modules being design. Are you creative or do you prefer the scientific focus of engineering?

Hi Ash,

At LSBU, for architecture you can study via the Architectural Assistant Apprenticeship (Architecture BA), or take full-time courses like Architecture BA (Hons) or Architecture with Foundation Year (BA Hons). The apprentice route lets you work in practice while studying; the full-time courses provide studio work, modelling, drawing, design theory, and technical modules. There’s also Architectural Technology and Architectural Technology with Foundation Year, which are more focused on the technical, construction, building performance side of architecture rather than just design. These are good if you enjoy the science/engineering side as well as the creative side.

In Civil Engineering, LSBU offers Civil Engineering BEng (Hons), Civil Engineering with Foundation Year, a Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship / Civil Design Engineer Apprenticeship, and a Civil Engineering Senior Technician Apprenticeship. These courses cover structures, geotechnics, surveying, materials, environmental & sustainable engineering, and many include site visits, field work, software/technical tools, and opportunities for placements. LSBU’s teaching is quite hands-on and they emphasise what employers want, so students get experience as well as theory.

In terms of accreditation and reputation: the Architectural Assistant Apprenticeship is fully validated by RIBA and prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB), which is essential if you want to become a registered architect. LSBU’s full Architecture BA (Hons) is also fully validated by RIBA and ARB. On the architectural technology side, the Architectural Technology courses are accredited by CIAT (Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists) and CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building).

On the civil engineering side, the BEng is accredited by the Engineering Council via the Joint Board of Moderators, meaning it meets the educational base for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and supports further learning for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

LSBU also has good outcomes in terms of student satisfaction (especially for architecture), strong facilities (studios, workshops, technical labs) and locational advantages in London. For architecture, the graduate salary data and LEO stats show strong earning potential.

If you’d like to see more of what LSBU offers, come along to our Open Day on the 15th November. You’ll be able to tour our media facilities, meet lecturers, and talk to current students about their experiences.
