Can I get into graduate medicine with a low UCAT score?

Hi! I was thinking applying to grad medicine only recently so I didn’t really have time to prepare for the UCAT but decided to do it anyway. It’s not a good score but not as bad as I anticipated.

I have a 1st in a nursing degree, worked in the NHS for a year and volunteer at a crisis call line. Additionally, managed to get shadowing with a doctor last week.

Does anyone think it’s worth applying this year or doing the UCAT/GAMSAT next year for 2027 entry?

I have to be perfectly honest with you and tell you that it's very unlikely you'll be able to do a successful application for graduate medicine with that UCAT score, however if you're passionate you should definitely give yourself more time to prepare next year and try to do the UCAT, GAMSAT or both.

Hi,

I hope you are doing well.

Do you think I have a chance at pursuing GEM at these unis: Warwick, Worcester, Chester, and Pears Cumbria?

GCSEs: all 7s and above, including English lit and lang, maths, and double science
A-level: CCC in bio, chem, and maths
Currently on track to get at least a 2:1 in Radiotherapy and Oncology.
I have worked as a support worker for 2 years and continue to do so. I have shadowed surgeons for 4 days. I have experience working in the NHS as a student therapeutic radiographer when I am on placements.

UCAT 1930 B2 overall

Hello,

I'd advise you to post on this thread: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7532244 and ask, but overall:

As far as I know Worcester is the only one that considers your GCSEs and yours will be fine for them. UCAT-wise, you're somewhat close to last year's cut-offs (approximately 100 points above or less of the cutoffs) . You might be fine, but since the cutoffs change every year, it's hard to say. I'd reccomend posting on the thread I linked above, they might be able to reassure you or give you more info than what I possess!

Warwick's never really grabbed me, although quite why I don't know. I do find their work experience requirements a bit draconian, so that's something to be mindful of when applying, to make sure you've got what they're seeking.

Pears Cumbria is a wild card. On paper it looks good, but it is so new its first students started earlier this month. There is literally no past students' experience to analyse to make an opinion of Pears Cumbria yet. I'm risking it as one of my options, but we're literally going in blind about Pears Cumbria.

Yeah, I get you on the Cumbria one. Kinda anxious about applying to Cumbria, but I am going to go for it anyway. Looked at the website, and the stats for last year were quite low. So hoping it stays low. tbh, I don't really mind where I go as long as I can end up becoming a doc. Also, for Warwick, I have support worker experience, experience as a student therapeutic radiographer, and shadowed surgeons for 4 days, so in terms of work experience, Warwick should be fine.

I share that mindset, of not minding where you go as long as you become a doctor at the end of the day. Sounds like you have enough experience for Warwick. I'm unsure if I do myself. I have above and beyond 70 hours' experience in healthcare settings but they're somewhat pedantic with what counts and I'm unsure if the hospital volunteering I do would be considered adequate by them... like I was reading in their website earlier today they don't credit being on shift with St John Ambulance, which has the dubious honour of being the most incredulous thing I've read today!

btw, how are you preparing for interviews? I am considering this interview course offered for £650 by MYUCAT. But really not too sure since its literally 1 month of my part-time salary. And I do not really have the support that I had at college, so not too sure how to go about interview prepping.

Similar Ucat score as you and considering similar universities. With Chester though they had a high Ucat cut average last year so I'm debating between that and KCL Portsmouth. Similar with Worcester I'm concerned about the multiple interviews and Casper test... How are you thinking of preparing for them... Regarding interview prep the best way is to do interview questions with as many people as possible in similar format. Like with friends or families and practice answering questions as clear and concise as possible. Even unfamiliar faces to get the same nerves. I honestly can't justify that much money and think it's expensive but I'm broke so if you can afford it and think it's beneficial go for it...

I've been reading every single medical book I could get my hands on this past year, and have recently borrowed two books about medicine interviews from my uni's library, which I'm yet to look at. My uni's career service offers a GEM interview workshop in November. I really would recommend seeing your uni's career service and see if they do something similar - they really don't advertise this sort of stuff and you have to really look for it, or go in person for a meeting and be told about it. Other than that, I will read around online and watch some videos about interview prep, and see if there are any other good interview prep books or resources I might be able to borrow, and obviously kidnap a couple of friends and do some simulations with them, but I wouldn't spend £650 on an interview course. It might be good, but it's just too much money, and I very much doubt they will tell you anything that you can't find out yourself if you dig deep enough online and have a little patience.

I have decided not to go with the package. I am just going to do as much practice as possible, and possibly get medical students to interview me as well through Superprof. Decided not to go forward with Chester coz quite frankly I am anxious about their high cut off. Instead of thinking of Swansea. What's your opinion on this?

Thanks for the tips

So, at the end I decided not to purchase the package. I am going to 'kidnap' a few of my friends as well 😉 and practise with them and through Superprof as well. Never thought about asking my uni about this sort of stuff. Going to email them now and see what they can offer.
