Uni advice!!!!!

Hey I’m looking for some advice about university.
I moved in last week and safe to say my mental health is already on the decline and I’m extremely homesick!
I totally understand that this can be a large part of starting university, but the stress has taken its toll.
I’m not proud to say I’m considering leaving uni to move to one next to my home, but I fear it may have to be done for the benefit of my mental health and physical health in the long run.
My family says they’ll support me no matter what (which I’m extremely grateful for) but I feel like such a let down after making a fuss about moving so far away.
On another note, my course is quite niche, and I don’t have access to a similar one in the field if I choose to transfer, yet, if I stay I risk possibly enjoying the course but overall being unhappy with my situation.
I know I should give it a few weeks to settle into everything and find a routine, but many factors mean I don’t have that time to spare.
Any advice on this would be so appreciated!!

You've been there one week, that's nothing. Moving away and starting university is a big adjustment which makes a lot of people nervous, but this is very likely to pass as you settle down into your new life. Stick it out, it will get better!

Hi there,

I am so sorry to hear that you have not been having a good experience at uni so far. It can be so hard when things don't go how you hoped, or when you feel homesick so I completely understand how you are feeling.

I would agree with what has been said here, it does get better after a couple of weeks when you start to settle in and get into a routine. It also gets easier when you start to meet more people on your course, and make a few friends. I also felt quite homesick when I first started uni, but it started to get a lot better after a few weeks, so it may be worth trying to stick it out for a bit longer. It's also tricky as if you really prefer the course at the uni you are at now, it makes sense to try and stay for a bit and see how you go, but I also understand that that probably feels quite hard right now.

However, on the flip side, if you really want to go home and you feel like this would be a lot better for you, don't feel as though it is something to be ashamed of. So many people end up moving back home, transferring universities or dropping out so it's not anything to be embarrassed about. You have tried it which is the main thing and you should be proud of yourself regardless.

I think something else which may help is talking to the wellbeing team at your uni. Often there will be a student support or wellbeing team who are there to help students so it is worth thinking about talking to them as it might really help you to have someone to talk to about this and they may help you to make up your mind.

I hope some of this helps and good luck in whatever you decide to do.

In what way has your mental health been in decline?
What specifically and exactly has caused this decline?

You mentioned stress. Is that the main issue, you feeling stressed? If so, what exactly has made you feel stressed?

You mentioned one big positive, in the niche nature of your course. There must be other positives about your uni and where you're living now. It would be a good exercise to jot down all the positives on a piece of paper.
