Medical uni choices am I competive

Hi, I have really been stressing about my uni choices for medicine as I am unsure about how competitive I will be for them.
UCAT score 2090 + Band 1 SJT
GCSE’s 998888877
A-level predictions A*A*A*
Also doing EPQ
Have work experience in hospital + 1 year volunteering in care home
The unis I want to apply for are Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield and Hull-York. Are these good choice based on my data. I am thankful for any advise anyone can offer!

Hi!

Try not to panic - your profile is actually very strong overall. Excellent GCSEs, high predicted grades, EPQ, and solid work experience/volunteering are all things medical schools (including HYMS) look for.

For Hull York specifically, applications are assessed holistically against the published criteria, including academics, UCAT (and SJT), and commitment to medicine. I can't comment on individual chances, but your application clearly shows a lot of strengths that HYMS values. Take a look at the entry requirements if you want some more reassurances!

Competitiveness does vary year to year and different unis weight things differently, so your choices look sensible. If you like HYMS’s course structure and focus on patient-centred, community-based medicine, it’s definitely worth applying.

Best of luck, you’ve clearly worked really hard for this! 💫

Hi @rrrrrrrrrrrrr323!

I completely sympathise with how stressful it can be when picking what Uni's you want to apply to- please make sure to look after yourself! Congratulations on your GCSE results and A level predictions- they're really great! It sounds like your work experience is super relevant to the course too, giving you lots to reflect on in your personal statement and interviews.

You can find out more about the Medicine admissions selection process at Uni of Sheffield here. Our minimum entry requirements for A levels and GCSE's are here - which is definitely worth taking a look at. You also mentioned that you are currently doing an EPQ, so definitely take a look at our website carefully as, provided you meet certain criteria, you could get a reduced Medicine offer if you were to get an A in EPQ 🙂.

It's also important to note that UCAT is another aspect of Medicine admissions, and the result of this also influences your 'competitiveness' alongside all of the above things you've mentioned.

I'm in my final year of Medicine here at Sheffield and have loved it so far! Do you have any questions about the course here that I can help with?😊
