Hello everyone,
Here at Chester University we are getting ready to welcome you all ready to start the new path in your academic journey. But one thing that you are most probably all feeling to some degree is nerves about moving away from home, which is probably, for many of you, the first time living away from your family. Whilst it's a really exciting prospect to have your independence, it can be daunting too.
It's totally natural to feel apprehensive about it, worrying about everything and anything, and when you first move in, many people feel really homesick, missing their family and friends. Although it might not be talked about in your halls and university accommodation, you won't be the only one to feel this way. Here are some tips on helping to navigate those first few weeks.
1. Keep in touch with everyone - phone, email, social media, whatever works best for you, but stay in regular contact with your family and friends from back home and this helps to stay connected to life there as well as telling them everything you have been up to.
2. Throw yourself into uni life and take advantage of all the events that are arranged for Freshers during the first few weeks. This really helps to navigate your way through the new routine and is a brilliant way to meet new friends and establish a 'home' at uni too.
3. Don't keep yourself contained in your room, this will make you feel more homesick as it won't give you any form of distraction and you won't be able to make friends either.
4. Get to know the wider area that the university is located in, have a look around the town/city, and see what else there is on offer. During Freshers week there are always lots of events and offers in the locale that you can take advantage of.
5. As tempting as it is to go home as soon as you start to miss everyone, try to resist the temptation and stay for the Freshers week. It will be hard, but it does get easier.
6. Reach out to the student services team at the university if you need some support, they will be very experienced in helping students with the move and with the feelings of missing home and struggling to settle in and adjust, don't be proud or embarrassed, it can often just be a conversation that makes all the difference.
I hope you really enjoy studying at Chester university. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
