missing workshops

I’m a new student, and I missed both the workshop and the orientation yesterday and today. When I checked the timetable earlier, there was no workshop scheduled, but when I looked again today, I saw that there was one, so I wasn’t able to attend. In this case, what should I do? What do UAL students usually do in the workshops during the first week? Will it be a problem that I missed them?

Dont worry, you have not missed much. Orientation/induction is just welcoming you to the course. Week 1 is when your lectures will actually begin. The important bits covered in the induction would have been how to access the class material (Blackboard, or Canvas or myPlace depending on which learning platform your uni is using) plus 15-minute overviews of what support the library and careers will provide.

Read the course handbook asap - it will have important information about which modules you will be studying in semester 1 and which modules will be covered in semester 2. It will also outline policies on plaigarism, asking for extensions etc. e.g. HERE is the link to the academic misconduct policy for Nottingham uni. Student mental health is key for unis so the handbook will provide guidance on where to go to seek help with your mental health. e.g. HERE is the site for student wellbeing at Sheffield Uni.

Every uni has a yearly calendar which will outline the term time dates and when the exam period is. If your course has exams its good to know now when they will be held. e.g. HERE is the link to key dates for Manchester uni.

Hope this helps

Hey @mmiichch!

It's definitely not uncommon for students to miss lectures/workshops in the first week or so, whether that's due to not knowing about them, not being able to find the room or having another commitment scheduled at the same time.

Most workshops in the first week of my course (Fine Art at Kingston School of Art) were induction/information sessions - e.g. how to safely use the equipment in the 3D workshop, how to make best use of the library and how to find your way around campus. Whilst this is good information to know, you can easily catch up on it later and most information should be available on Moodle (UAL's learning platform).

Try not to worry too much about it - after all, you can always ask your tutor/lecturers in your next session if you missed anything important.

Hope this helps and best of luck with your course!
Eve (Kingston Rep).
