How to choose a subject area for your degree

So, you’re trying to figure out what subject to study at university. Maybe you’ve already got a dream course in mind—awesome! But if you’re feeling unsure, or changing your mind every time you watch a new documentary or TikTok video, don’t stress. That’s totally normal, and we’ve got some tips to help you find the subject that’s right for you. Let’s start with the big one: your future job. If you already have a career goal (or even just a rough idea), you can work backwards to figure out which subjects will get you there.
For example:

Want to be a lawyer? A Law degree (LLB) is your starting point.

Dreaming of becoming a psychologist? Psychology is your go-to subject.

Even if your dream job doesn’t require a specific degree, some subjects can give you a real edge. Need help exploring your options? Check out our Career Finder Tool it's packed with ideas and advice.

💖 Choose Something You Actually Enjoy
Here’s the truth: uni can be tough at times. Long nights, deadlines, revision—yep, it happens. So why not make life easier by picking a subject that actually interests you?
Think about what grabs your attention:

Binge true crime shows? Criminology could be your thing.

Into tech and gadgets? Try Computer Science.

Got business ideas bouncing around in your head? A Business degree might be perfect.

If you're excited about what you’re learning, it’ll be so much easier to stay motivated—especially during exam season.

🎓 Dive into the Subject Content
This might sound obvious, but it’s super important: actually look at what you’ll be studying in each course.
Not all degrees are the same, even within the same subject. One uni’s Psychology course might focus on neuroscience, while another dives into social behavior or mental health. The key? Check out the module list and see what really sparks your interest.
The best way to do this? Attend an open day. You’ll get to explore course content, chat with current students, and imagine yourself there. Here’s where to find one: 👉 Open Days University of Law
