How to apply for brighton uni : a graduates top tips

Hi everyone! for those who are thinking of applying to university, it is time to start that process! I've shared below the process of thing you will need to do and my top tips for each stage below.

Think about what course you want to do.
Some of you may know exactly what you want to do, some of you will have no idea.

Think about subject areas you can see yourself studying for 3+ years and what you see yourself having a job in. A good place to look is our Academic Departments page

Filter down to a rough idea of the course / subject you want to do. That way you can keep your options open.

Look and see if brighton fits the criteria for what you want in a uni

Is the unis entry requirements around your predicted grades. You can find our entry requirements on our course pages. If you have international requirements, you can search your country into our site and find the requirements there.

Is the uni in an area that you like? (In a town/city or more rural? by the sea , by the country etc) Brighton is by the sea, and has both city esq areas and places that are more village like. We also have the south downs right outside the town if you crave that countryside fee

Do they offer accommodation that you like and is in your price range?

What are the employability / grad outcome after the degree? Brighton is in the top 50 universities in England for graduate prospects and 91.4% of our graduates are in work or further study!

Look at what the course is like?

What is taught on the course- You can find all of the modules you will study under the course content section of the course page

How is the course assessed? is it exams, coursework, presentations, reports?

What are the facilities like for the course?

How many students will be on our course and in classes?

How much time will be spent in lessons?

Does the course need an interview?

Attend open days
Going to open days are a great way to find out the answers to the questions above as well as getting a feel for the campus and the vibe of the uni. It's also a great way to help get that long list now to a shortlist of unis.

Write your personal statement.
You may have already started writing this which is great! If you've not thought about it yet dont worry! you have a bunch of time left. I would suggest looking at the questions in the personal statement and starting by noting down things you could talk about and going from there. expanding the bullet points to longer notes, then to full sentences and paragraphs and then next thing you know, you have a full personal statement.
I always recommend sending the personal statement to your tutor as many times as you can and get feedback and improve.

We also have some advice for personal statements that you can find here

Send off your application!

Attend applicant days.
These are a great way to have a more detailed look at those shortlisted unis. take a look at accommodation again, find out more about the course etc. you are more able to compare the unis as you now have a frame of reference.

Join offer holder communities!
Lots of unis have offer holder communities so you can ask questions, find people studying your course etc. It's a great way to start to feel more comfortable with the uni. Look out for emails in 2026 from us inviting you to this if you get an offer from us!

Once you've received all your offers: Make your choice!
You can take your time making this decision, but UCAS does have what's known as 'decline by default' dates where if you don't make the decision by then, your offer will be declined but that isn't till 6 May 2026 (if you received all offers by the end of march)

I hope this helps anyone understand what their next steps are. If you have any questions about applying or studying at uni, let me know or you can ask the uni directly a question here
