Whether you need support in mental health well-being, disability adjustments, finance or academic support, your university's ‘student support service’ page usually lists everything in one place.
1.
For mental health well-being, there is student counselling services where you can talk to a trained counsellor about your emotions/hardships. If your mental health well-being is affecting your studies, it is essential that you access the Mental Health Support Service. They can assist with academic-related matters (e.g., extensions, mitigating circumstances, appealing results, etc).
2.
If you have any form of disability or health condition, it is ideal that you get in contact with the Disability Services before starting university. They can adjust you during your studies and your time on campus. From exam accommodations to assistive/accessibility technology.
3.
If you're experiencing financial difficulties, the Financial Support Services team can help. Even if you’re not in crisis, it’s worth checking what bursaries are available (you may qualify for one 😀). Many universities offer bursaries like care leavers, estranged students, students from low-income households and others.
4.
At any point during your studies, if you’re feeling academically behind or unhappy with your grades, the Academic Support Service can help. They often run workshops, activities, lectures and various resources on essay writing, revision strategies, time management and other useful features.

As soon as you start university, you’ll be assigned an academic supervisor that regularly checks-in on you. Don’t be shy to reach out to them if you need any type of support. Even if your concern feels small or unrelated, they can point you in the right direction. They’re literally there to help you 😊.

The first thought that pops into mind when thinking about student union is probably ‘societies and events’, but there’s more to that. Student union is great if you’re in need of advice on finance, housing or academic appeals. They have dedicated individuals who know all the ins and outs of student schemes. If you want to move out of your student accommodation but need a replacement tenant or if you’re looking for an accommodation, student union is a good place to seek advice from.
