Changing Maintenance Loan

I originally applied for my student finance this year under the assumption I would be living with my parents. My situation has changed and I will now be going into halls. Is there any way I can change my maintenance loan application and get some more money for this year so I can afford rent for my accommodation? I know it’s late, but I’m kind of panicking.

Hi there,

You should be able to change your living location on your online account. If it does not allow you to do so then it should direct you to a Change of Circumstances form which can be uploaded from you online account. Once processed we can re-assess your entitlement from living at home to living in your own accommodation.

Thanks, Drew

I have changed my living location on my account. Do I need to do anything else to get a higher maintenance loan?

That's great, that's all you need to do.

When your application is approved again we'll automatically award you the higher rate of Maintenance Loan. Please keep and eye on your account and e-mails for this to happen.

Actually now that you mention it - if the increase is approved after the date when I would initially get my first instalment of my student loan, what happens? Is the increase implemented on the second and third payments only?

In this case you'd actually get another payment.

So, if you get the first payment and then the change gets approved you'll receive another payment to make up the difference: this will arrive within 3 working days.

Your next two payments will be automatically adjusted too.

Thanks, Graeme
