Music at University?

Hi,
I'm submitting my application soon to study Music at uni or a conservatoire, but I am unsure as to whether it is Music I would like to study? I'm really passionate and involved with it and would like to study it further, but lots of universities seem to have lots of focus on Western Classical Tradition, which is good but I don't know if I could do it for 3 years. Does anyone have any advice and know much about the music courses at universities? Also, I would like to go into a job that helps people. Do you know of anything that I could do with music?

I recently discovered Liberal Arts courses where you can combine lots of different subject which sounds really good but I've already written my personal statement for music and have to have my application in soon.

I would appreciate any advice.
Thanks

What kind of music do you want to study? There are courses in popular music, songwriting, jazz or even folk music for example

You could look into things like Music Therapy, music in the community, working with people with dementia etc

Have a look at Southampton uni or Nottingham uni, they both have a lot of varied options for modules

Hi there!

I hope you are doing well. I completely understand your scenario, I was in a similar scenario 4 years ago. I have just completed my undergraduate degree in music this summer and absolutely loved every second of it!

The key feature that drew me to Southampton was the fact that you can target your course to what you want to do! For example, I am not the largest fan of composition and the entire time at uni I was able to chose modules that did not include this area of music! My largest focuses at uni were music education, music therapy, how the arts work, conducting and performance and I have been able to fulfil this to a high level through the opportunities this uni have provided to me. This includes performing in our concert hall, Turner Sims, conducting a small orchestra, and completing various placements with young children using music. There is more information here if you would like to explore modules that we offer:

Hope this helps!
