PPE, Law and Accounting&Finance

Hi I’m a year 12 student studying Maths, English literature and Economics. I got 9987777666 in my GCSE and I go to a non-selective state school. My dream is Oxbridge+LSE which are very competitive and obviously still early in sixth form so I actually need to get the predicted grades before I think about applying. I’m just curious about super curriculars I can do now to prepare. Especially for PPE as I don’t do politics or philosophy. I’m also unsure about what to study or what job I would like in the future, I just want to learn as much about careers and degrees in year 12.

To be honest, try and apply for any experience you can, and then when the time comes to write your personal statement you can link skills you learnt from those to how they would help you excel in your subject. For example, i am in Yr13 and applying for a biology degree but I recently did an accounting work experience and linked this to the statistical analysis skills i will need in some biology modules . Just getting any sort of super-curricular experience will really boost your reputation as it shows you are proactive!

Where am I supposed to get the 4th A* from if I’m doing 3, I thought unis only look at top 3??? I also go to a non-selective state school where the average is a 5. Ok maybe I should rule out Oxbridge+LSE but surely not ALL Russell groups will rule me out just cause I didn’t get all 9s

The other guy is a bit of a cynic, you would probably need at least 2A star A for Durham or better and probably 3A stars for UCL or better. Going to a state school helps but PPE is very competitive and has the best applicants in the country from state schools or not. You could apply Oxford if you get 3A stars and do well on TSA. Personal statement and reference is also very important for LSE so if you do some impressive things your chances aren't 0.

have a look at some threads on economics related competitions and work experience, that can be very helpful. You will NEED stuff related to politics and philosophy on the statement if you don't do them for a level. Lots of people apply with just econ so it's very common to have one sided candidates.

Im sorry for being unserious. the guy who said im a cynic is also my friend. I'm also applying PPE and im in yr 13 doing maths, further maths, history and economics. I found doing essay competitions really helpful. Some good ones are the John Locke, FCDO Government competition, and IEA Monetary essay competiton. Don't be discouraged if you don't place in any at first, i only placed in late august and early september for some competitions. Your GCSE profile is decent but LSE do look at GCSE scores a lot and considering many people have many more 9s and 8s it will definitely be competitive. Warwick is also rly good for PPE so I'd consider there. York is good too. I don't do politics or philosophy either but doing some reading is good. I recommend Wolff's 'An Introduction to Political Philosophy' and 'Why Nations Fail'. If you wanna go to Oxford for PPE they have an admissions test called the TSA. for philosophy, you can check out the cambridge logic textbook as logic will most certainly come up in the philo interview. Anything non-academic isn't worth it unless you can relate it to your personal statement. Hope this helps!

In addition to this it isn't too late to take a 4th a level, I would suggest philosophy, history or further math IMO politics isn't as well respected.

Perhaps some work experience would help you decide on what you wanna do in the future. Similarly, im unsure what i want to go into so hoping to do some internships during uni

look at this: List of Essay Competitions/ Challenges for Year 12s - The Student Room
I would also suggest doing a competition like the IEA budget challenge because of you do well it can lead to an internship, I placed in the finals and got an extremely coveted internship because of that. Its also great for developing external knowledge, and I'm pretty sure they are doing a quarter finals this year so it will be easier to get some level of award to flex.

Also I wouldn't suggest accounting and finance, not very well respected and quite bad career prospects in comparison to econ, PPE or lse finance.

Yeah I’ve heard of alot of people saying that but my parents said I should just consider it but ig to them they like it since there is a clear job at the end of it, even if it’s not necessarily the best. Unless I do a gap year and sit FM, I don’t think I can apply to a top uni doing Economics. Do you think a degree in PPE or Politics/Philosophy(or anything)+Economics is a good idea? Will it still give me the same or similar job prospects?

I don’t think I can pick up a 4th at school but like I said I might be able to self-teach/sit FM privately.
