Oxbridge or not???

Hi,

I finished my A levels this year in History (A), RS (A*) and Spanish (A*). It had been my dream to go to Oxford or Cambridge to study law yet I got rejected from cambridge earlier this year. I'm taking a gap year to save for uni and also do some cool volunteering and travelling opportunities, and reapplying this year.
I visited Oxford last week (because I prefer the look of the law degree being jurisprudence) and as expected it was beautiful, but I just can't decide if I want to apply early again. It means deciding on which other unis I'm going to apply to very soon which I still am unsure about.
In terms of Oxbridge, I think I would really enjoy the academic rigour of those unis and am not really bothered about the lack of nightlife either. they're also stunning and I just love the vibe and the aesthetic. This had been my original thinking with applying to Cambridge.

Now I'm just stressed (if you couldn't tell) bc I don't want (bc of it feeling a bit rushed) my application to be weaker. I just don't want to miss out on the opportunity to study at oxbridge if that was a possibility, plus I won;t know if I don't try, and I did get a Cambridge interview. But maybe that was the problem, my performance at interview, and therefore I'm not cut out for those unis??

I honestly don't know what to do so literally any advice to consider would be appreciated.

Thanks

You can try for Oxford if you want to, there's nothing stopping you, other than the ability to write a personal statement in the short time left until the deadline and sort out a reference, but that's all very doable. You don't even need to decide which other universities to apply to, you can apply just to Oxford now and add the other 4 to UCAS at a later date, but before the equal considerations deadline in January!

It's true that some people are not suited for the intense style of teaching at Oxbridge, however, just because you were interviewed for Cambridge and rejected doesn't mean that you're unsuited for it. Oxbridge rejects many capable people every year because they just simply don't have the places, and who knows, maybe you were one of them. Also don't discount the personal growth and changes that you've gone through in the last year. You're a different person now, and hopefully you'll interview better, if you're lucky enough to get one.

If you want to, definitely try! Worse that can happen is they say no.

Wow, thanks so much for your response, I had no idea that you could apply and then add extra unis later on, that's so helpful to know - it has fully changed my perspective on everything now. I was planning on using my personal statement from last year and just formatting it into the new style, and same with my reference, just asking my teacher to add in a couple of extra bits I've done in the last year.

The literal only thing which has put me off applying early has been the other unis seeing that I've done so. but now I guess that wouldn't be a problem.

I think now it's just knuckling down on LNAT prep - I've even managed to move my test from the 4th October to the 13th! So I've got more time to prep for that. Thanks so much for your advice. Did you attend one of Oxford or Cambridge?

Glad to have helped! And good luck with the LNAT!

I haven't studied at either Oxford or Cambridge, although I did apply to medicine at Oxford and went as far as the interviews. I won't bore you with my life afterwards, but the relevant bit is that you should chase your dreams, whatever they might be (in my case, Oxford wasn't the dream so much as the icing on the metaphorical dream cake of studying medicine).

I wonder have you chosen a college yet for Law at Oxford University? 😧

St. John's, Wadham, Hertford and Univ might be worth considering perhaps? 😀

Also, don't forget to checkout: "The Oxford University Alternative Prospectus."

Hey!!

I’m just wondering if you have sat the LNAT this test cycle? Because I’m pretty sure u can’t carry over ur score from a previous year. Meaning that if you haven’t already booked and sat ur LNAT this September/ October, I don’t think you can apply for Oxbridge.

(I could be wrong so defo fact check this)!!

You can’t carry over an LNAT score from a previous year. It must be retook for this cycle.

Is your LNAT booked for the deadline? 😧 Because you might have to apply in October 2026.
