Autumn 2025 Anime thread

The days grow shorter, the nights grow longer, and a new anime season quickly approaches! In this thread, I will be looking at all the upcoming full length TV anime (that I'm aware of!), and giving my first impressions of each. I hope someone else finds the thread helpful - please do join in and discuss what you're looking forward to watching!

(Most of these series are due to start airing in the first few weeks of October. If you're looking for something to watch between now and then, maybe check last season's preview thread for some ideas!)

I am aware that imgur has suddenly decided to block their images in the UK without warning... so the key visuals are going to take some time to fix. :sigh: I'll do what I can, if and when I have the time.
It begins... kind of. I don't usually cover 'episode 0' prologues, but nothing else that aired today caught my fancy.

Towa no Yuugure (Dusk Beyond the End of the World) Episode 0 [content warning: violence]

In the near future year of 2029, AI has evolved to the point where AP (Artificial Personality) is just within humanity's grasp... but not everyone wants it. Teen prodigy Towasa's efforts to develop this technology are thwarted by political and religious opposition, as well as interference from rival companies. At the same time, she also wishes to take her relationship with her adoptive brother to a more romantic level - turns out he feels the same way about her, and on the 10th anniversary of his moving in with her, they are finally able to confess their true feelings to each other. Flash forward 10 years to 2039, and Towasa debuts her new cybernetic implant technology, to a shocking reception.

I have to compliment the animation and character designs, this show is GORGEOUS. Not sure what the curved letterboxing at the top and bottom of the screen are about, perhaps just an artistic way to show this is a flashback? The AI shown in this episode is an interesting hybrid between the janky machine learning of recent years, and your more standard sci-fi kind that can perform most tasks, thinking but not necessarily feeling, helpful but slightly sinister. IMO it nailed the near-future feel. Don't know why they felt the need to go down the 'technically not incest' route for our main character's love interest, but I'm interested enough to check out the actual first ep when that airs tomorrow.

Bear with me, my first autumn anime review is up, but keeps disappearing into the ether... time to stop making these threads, perhaps.
And here's the actual first episode (but do watch the ep 0 prologue first, that's where all the backstory and character introduction happens):

Towa no Yuugure (Dusk Beyond the End of the World) [content warning: explicit violence]
Towa no Yuugure1.jpg

Akira wakes up to find the world he knew lying in overgrown ruins. He's been in cold sleep for who knows how long, with his pod becoming an object of worship for generations of people! Society has largely reverted to pre-industrial revolution levels of technology. Countries no longer exist, with the world instead governed by a force known as OWEL, who keep information about history and science closely under wraps. And it is a representative of this OWEL that shows up, 'confiscates' Akira as a living artifact, and threatens the family who discovered and looked after him. Fortunately, he is saved by a hooded figure - who looks remarkably like his adoptive sister / love interest from the distant past!

I think it's safe to say at this point that this show is going to be very trashy, despite the high production values; the guy from OWEL (which yes, is pronounced 'Orwell', very subtle! ) was the biggest pantomime villain I've seen in a long time, hard to take him seriously. And then android girl Yugure showed up with a lightsaber and railgun and just blasted everything! If the storyline falls into 'so bad, it's good' territory, with bonus breathtaking action scenes, I could see myself getting some enjoyment out of it. But first, I'll wait and see if the season has any 'just plain good' shows more worthy of my time.

The first two episodes of this one aired back to back, but as per usual, I'm only covering first episodes here.

Saigo ni Hitotsu dake Onegai shitemo Yoroshii deshou ka? (May I Ask for One Final Thing?) [content warning: bullying, violence]
Screenshot (805).jpg

As the daughter of a duke, Scarlet El Vandimion has been fated since before she was even born to marry Kyle Von Pallistan, the kingdom's spoilt 2nd prince. But ever since the two first met as children, Kyle has relentlessly bullied Scarlet, something which only got worse over time as she excelled at her studies while he struggled. Despite it all, Scarlet held firm and put up with the harsh treatment for the sake of her family... until the day prince Kyle finally announces to a packed room of sycophants that he has a new lover and is cancelling their engagement. Scarlet asks for just one final thing in return: that she be allowed to beat the heck out of everyone gathered there.

Second show of the season, second pantomime villain in a row! But the over the top evil antics of Kyle and the other nobles feel way more at home in a show like this, clearly presented as a comedy, than they did in Towa no Yuugure which presented as otherwise very serious. Scarlet is an early contender for best character of the season, someone who just wants to let go and unleash her fists in righteous fury, but is normally prevented from doing so by the rules of nobility. The knuckle gloves were the absolute cherry on the cake, she came prepared. Haven't a clue what the plot will be going forwards, but I'm happy to follow whatever adventures she gets up to next.

Merry Christmas! :santa2:

SANDA [content warning: violence]
Untitled.jpg

In a world where the weather hardly changes from season to season, and Christmas is a distant memory, Kazushige Sanda suddenly finds himself under attack one December 25th morning by a knife-wielding classmate, Fuyumura Shiori! Saved by the arrival of other classmates, Sanda convinces himself this was some awkward adolescent confession of love, and agrees to meet Shiori after school... where he is attacked again, and this time receives what would normally be a mortal stab wound! But it turns out Sanda is no ordinary schoolboy - he is a descendant of Santa Claus, and his bright red bloodstained shirt unlocks the final part of the ritual to awaken his hidden powers.

What an absolutely wacky premise, I love it! Shiori is a terrifying deuteragonist, clearly willing to endanger herself and others in her quest to find her missing friend, while Sanda seems like a loveable idiot, they should make for a very fun combo. I completely missed during initial previews that the original manga is by Itagaki Paru of Beastars fame, so I know the author is capable of some amazing, dark plotlines with shocking twists. I'm not sure I've seen a human character design from her prior to this, but they're so unique and expressive. Animation from Science SARU is gorgeous as usual. Yep, definitely watching this one to the end!

Shuumatsu Touring (Touring After the Apocalypse)
Untitled.jpg

Yoko and Airi tour a post-apocalyptic Japan, riding an electric Serow motorbike charged via portable solar panels. This first episode saw them visit Hakone, or what's left of it - most human infrastructure is overgrown and crumbling, though all kinds of wildlife thrives in the ruins. The two forage for preserved food tins as they go, but only take what they need, leaving helpful messages for any future travelers. Though their destination has yet to be revealed, they seem to be following the path of their 'Big Sis', comparing smartphone photos of a woman (riding the same bike, in a notably pre-apocalyptic world) to their present surroundings.

I love it when a show chooses not to reveal too much too soon. We don't know exactly what caused the apocalypse, or how long ago it was, but we're presented with clues (Mt. Fuji has a new smoking crater, there are abandoned military vehicles lying around, a garbled alarm warns of dangerously high radiation levels, and Yoko casually mentions having left a shelter). And it quickly becomes clear that there's more to our two protagonists than the synopsis suggested! An odd balance of cozy slice-of-life and dangerous survival horror, though it'll *probably* skew more towards the former if I had to guess. I look forward to piecing together more of what's going on here.

Watashi wo Tabetai, Hitodenashi (This Monster Wants to Eat Me) [content warning: suicidal ideation]

Hinako lives alone, having lost her parents and brother. She feels depressed, particularly during the summer months, which bring the sad and painful memories to the surface. One summer's day after school, she wanders near to the water's edge in a daze, only to suddenly find herself under attack by a terrifying sea monster! She is saved by a girl who smells of the sea, Shiori, who is in fact a shapeshifting mermaid. Shiori is no benevolent hero, however - apparently Hinako's body is particularly delicious, and the mermaid wants her for herself. But to Hinako, if it means rejoining her family and ending her suffering, this encounter might be just what she wished for.

Another queer romantic monster horror drama, just in time to replace last season's Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu! Dark subject matter though, if you're looking for something light and upbeat, steer clear of this one. The use of the sea to visualise Hinako's depression / trauma was effective; the way she struggled to motivate herself to do things, especially when her friend Miko wasn't available to support her, certainly resonated with me too. Disappointing on the action side maybe, the fight between Shiori and the iso-onna happened largely off-screen, but that's clearly not meant to be the main focus - it looks set to deliver on the emotional terror side.

Shabake [content warning: violence]

Ichitarou is the young heir to a large business in Edo period Japan. He has been sickly since childhood, spending much of his time bedbound, but never alone - for he can see and befriend spirits. Fearing for the boy's future, his grandfather prayed to Inari, and was granted two spirits in human form to act as Ichitarou's companions throughout life. Now, several years later, Ichitarou finds these caretakers and his family's other staff's cautious and protective nature to be overbearing. He sneaks out one evening, but returns later than planned, and encounters a robber en-route! Though able to escape with the help of a bell spirit, he finds something even worse outside his home: a murder scene.

I liked pretty much everything about this! Great world building and detail, lovely designs (I was worried I wouldn't be able to tell the characters apart since the Edo period basically had one permitted hairstyle, but that hasn't been an issue so far), and just a really cute and cozy vibe... until the dramatic night time scenes. Apparently this is going to be a murder mystery, a fave genre of mine! The protagonist doesn't seem like your typical detective, but he does have some supernatural help - hopefully the spirits will add to the plot, rather than conveniently showing up at the right time and place to help Ichitarou out, but so far they're all standing out as strong characters in their own right.

Spy x Family S3 [content warning: violence]

Loid, Yor, Anya and Bond spend a nice day out at a park - all part of the spy's mission to make it look like they're a normal, happy family to anyone who might be watching. But when Bond foresees a construction vehicle going berserk and attacking the park's innocent visitors, and Anya reads his mind, a race against time begins to stop this from happening. Will Anya manage to find the would-be attacker? And can she stop them without revealing her powers? A decent but not overly flashy reintroduction, featuring the usual mix of silly comedy and action, and giving all four family members a chance to shine in the first half. The 2nd segment (introducing Nightfall to Franky) wasn't bad either.

Boku no Hero Academia Final Season (My Hero Academia Final Season) [content warning: violence]

Big showdowns in this final season! Episode 1 mostly focused on All Might vs All For One - The former, quirkless and physically weak, but reinforced by a custom built armoured suit, chock full of gadgets inspired by his pupils' powers. The latter, rapidly de-aging, driven by pure hatred, and rocking all kinds of quirks stolen from others. An epic and emotional battle... of which about half was recap from the end of S7, but seeing as that aired a year ago, I appreciated the reminder of where they'd gotten to. Great character moments for Aoyama and Hagakure, too. Super excited for this grand finale, an entire decade from when I first started watching.

Yep! Feels like every season has to have a remake of a classic 60s - 90s anime nowadays, something I am not complaining about if they're done well!

I really need to continue with this anime, no matter how. By the by have you watched the original anime of cat's eye?
Sticking to the sequels until the weekend, as they're less effort after a long working day!

Uma Musume: Cinderella Grey Part II

Cinderella Grey is the story of Oguri Cap's unlikely rise from unknown rural underdog, to the peak of national racing competition. But while we did get to catch up with her latest victory and future plans in the latter half of this episode, it actually started with a return to Kasamatsu and a spotlight on Oguri's first rival, Fujimasa March (as well as the former bully-turned-fanclub comic relief trio). Though March's recent win record hasn't been great, she made it clear that she hasn't given up on her dreams of chasing and repeating her victory over Oguri. A solid episode, with plenty of great reaction faces and scenes crying to be made into GIFs, but they're clearly saving the bigger races for later.

No, I would like to, but it's one of many long series from that era that I haven't found time for yet.
