Tips For Registering for a GP as a university student

Welcome to all new Kingston University students! I hope moving in is going well. Just wanted to share some tips and tricks for using Kingston University's health service.

Accessing medical services at uni can seem daunting, especially if you don’t know where to look. I’ve got some tips for you on how to make sure you’re keeping on top of your health and where to find all the resources.

Medical Practices Kingston university partners with Fairhill medical practice and it has three branches in Kingston so it's convenient for any campus you're studying at. One of the locations is located a 2 minute walk just at the back of our Penhryn road campus.

Booking Appointments
Appointments are booked via the Patient Access app or calling at 8am. You can create a login there easily or use your NHS login. The available appointments for the day are all released at 8am, so once the phone lines are activated, calls come flooding in. I’ve called at 8:04 before and there was already a queue of 13 people. The app offers slightly faster results as you can just click without the option menu of the phone or having to speak to anyone. I recommend you wake a bit before 8am to log into the app because the authenticator process is slow.

Prescriptions
Prescriptions are picked up at your nominated pharmacies,
I use Boots on Union Street because it has a later closing time than the one in Bentalls and it’s a lot larger.
You can get the Boots app and bring your student ID to get a student discount if you register it, the cashiers will help you. For simple repeated medication, the pharmacy can prescribe it, and it is much simpler than going through the medical system and it’s free for students.

Health Checks
When joining university, it's a good idea to make sure you're registered so if anything comes up, you're already one step ahead and can make an appointment without having to deal with finding a new GP. Have you signed up to your local GP yet? What was your experience like?
