Applying to courses with a higher entry requirement than my predicteds

So, I would like to apply for engineering/mechanical engineering at the following unis while I'm predicted the following:
B in Physics
B in Computer Science
B in Maths

These are the following courses I want to apply to, as well as the entry requirements for it since I am contextual for a couple:

Engineering H236 Birmingham (Ideal): AAB no contextual (to include mathematics which I take)
Engineering H100 Edinburgh (Aspirational): ABB Contextual (Physics and maths at a B)
Mechanical Engineering with Year in Industry H300 Queen Marys University London (Safe): BBB (Including Maths and Physics)
Engineering H101 Exeter (Safe): BBB(Including Maths and Physics)

What I wanted to ask was, would I be better off picking another safe option? Or perhaps another ABB or AAB course? (For the safe options I would be more than happy for some reccomendations, and as for perhaps another aspirational I was looking at Electronic and Electrical Engineering (Industrial) H601 at Leeds which was an AAB or maybe that same course at Bristol which is an ABB (including an A in a level mathematics), however I think I would prefer Leeds. When I look at similar threads to this I see people raising the concern that one might not perform very well on their actual A levels, but I don't think thats something I would be concerned about, I'm more worried about if I can get into any of my aspirationals.

Leave one space free until you get responses from those four.

I agree with the response above mine, best to leave a space open until later. If you were to choose a 5th uni now, I would recommend going for a safety thats ideally got lower entry requirements than your current predicteds (if possible). I know messing up alevels might not seem like a concern but I've known too many people who didn't include safeties, had some personal crisis or something similar which caused their performance in exams to suffer, and missed both their firm and insurance offers. Going through clearing after a double rejection on results day isn't a pleasant experience, so why risk it when the 5th choice is open anyway?

But yeah, I'd say wait for now. Just something to think about.

Hi max strongman,

From an Exeter perspective, the entry requirements for Mechanical/General Engineering are usually AAB including Maths and Physics, with contextual routes where BBB can be considered. Since you’ve said you’re predicted Bs across Maths, Physics and CompSci, Exeter could be a really good safe choice because you’d be applying right in line with those contextual requirements.

The course here is broad in first year, which is useful if you’re still exploring different areas, and then you specialise more into Mechanical or other branches in later years. There’s also the option of a Year in Industry or Year Abroad, which a lot of students find really valuable for employability (would highly recommend).

In terms of your wider question: having at least one or two “safer” BBB choices is definitely sensible. Even if you feel confident about your predictions, unis can be competitive, so it’s good to make sure you’ve got courses on your list where you’re very likely to secure a place. Exeter could fit that role well for you. At the same time, it’s worth keeping one or two aspirational picks in case you do push those grades up.

So I’d say Exeter makes a strong safe choice, especially with your profile - and adding one more safety net uni at BBB wouldn’t hurt if it gives you extra peace of mind.

If you have anymore questions on Exeter or the course please do reach out 🙂

All your choices could be considered aspirational, given that around 80% of predicted grades are inflated typically. What mock grades did you get?

My mocks were quite dismal, if I say so myself. I got a B in computer science, and a C in maths and physics. I know I seem delusional for thinking that I could even reach an AAB course offer, but I do know that I can.

It’s great to have ambition so applying to an AAB option as an aspirational choice is a good idea to motivate yourself! What im suggesting is that you have a couple of choices at or below the grades youre currently working at (BCC) as a safer choice in that case that you dont get the grade you want and need an option to fall back on. Your other option would be to plan to take a gap year and retake if you dont get at least BBB.
