Request for Advice on Course – Medicine (Foundation vs Contextual 5-Yr Standard

I would greatly appreciate your advice and guidance in helping me decide the most suitable course option for studying Medicine, particularly between a Foundation Year programme and a Contextual 5-Year course.

I am eligible for the Widening Participation (WP) scheme through my care-experienced/estranged background and would like to make the most informed decision moving forward.

UCAT (taken today): 1900, Band 3
Predicted A-Levels: ABB or AAB (Psychology, Biology, Chemistry)
GCSEs (9 total): 2x Grade 8, 5x Grade 7, 2x Grade 6 (in Chemistry and Computer Science)

I have done some initial research into both course types, and based on my UCAT score, I feel that applying directly to the standard 5-year Medicine course may be too risky. I am therefore leaning towards applying for a Foundation Year course as a potentially safer and more suitable option.
However, I am finding it difficult to locate specific UCAT cut-off scores or interview thresholds for foundation courses, as this information doesn’t seem to be publicly available. The entire process has felt quite overwhelming, and I would sincerely value your thoughts on how best to proceed—particularly in terms of identifying realistic UCAT entry requirements for Foundation Year Medicine programmes.
The universities I am currently considering includes Lancaster, Leeds, UEA, HYMS, and Bristol.
Thank you in advance for your time and support

Hello! @Skvinayagam 🙂
I appreciate this is a stressful and overwhelming time and you are not alone!
For UEA, there is not cut off point for the UCAT and it is used to rank applicants for interviews. With that being said there is still a chance of entry even with a lower UCAT.
In terms of which course you should do, I'd highly recommend you research the courses in depth. Look at the course profiles to see the modules you'll take but also pay attention to how the learning will be carried out and see which one resonates with you most.
I'd also recommend speaking to current students who are doing either courses and just ask for their experience. UEA does have a UniBuddy system where you can speak to current students so do feel free to use that.
I hope this helps to reduce some of the stress that comes with university applications! Do let me know if you have any questions! 🙂
Good luck applying!
