A Level Law extracurricular advice

Hey everyone,

I’m in Y12 and doing A level Law at my college they offer a national bar mock trial team for extracurriculars this is very strict in terms of commitment sometimes you have to stay after college missing your college provider bus which is impossible for me. I have dropped out of that and enrolled in the moot club however I need some advice

This extends to anyone but to study law at prestigious universities what extra curriculars can I do on my own that are well respected that you guys recommend, this can be mooting competitions, essay competitions, courses etc

P.S. ignore any grammatical mistakes I’m typing this while it’s freezing outside

Essay competitions are a bit of a waste of time - Unis usually just ignore them because they don't say anything special about you as an individual or explain why you want to do Law.
Law is a hefty academic degree - you need to be able to show that you have the intellectual capability to understand complicated concepts and ideas. Use examples of some Law topics/issues that interest you, and why, as discussion points in your PS.

Reading etc suggestions :
lawreadinglist.pdf (RHUL),
Microsoft Word - Stage 1 pre-reading list 2025-26 (Newcastle)
Both good for all Unis. You can borrow most of these through your local public library - ask the librarians for their help - or buy them 2nd hand on Ebay etc.

Useful Moocs - short free online courses from sensible Unis
Inside the UK Supreme Court - Online Law Course - FutureLearn
Introduction to English Common Law | Coursera
Citizenship and the Rule of Law | Coursera

BBC podcasts - easy to listen to - BBC Radio 4 - The Law Show - Available now
