Studying law

Hi everyone,

I am currently a year 13 student and plan on studying law as of next year, but ive been having some doubt on whether I should continue going through with law since I feel as though it might be too overwhelming, stressful and draining. Could some you you give me your inputs and tell me about your experiences in law school and some things that people think are common things but are really myths in regards of studying law.
Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I cannot deny that law is difficult, law is challenging, law is overwhelming and law can be stressful. However, studying law will change you, it will make you a different person, a better person. You will leave University a different person. You will learn about all the important things around you, particularly those things which are not covered at school such as mortgages. Law also has an awful lot of reading.

Although law is demanding, law is very enjoyable and very intellectually stimulating. And it is true what McBride says, you start loving the law more and more the further into it you get.

However, please don't pick law if you don't think it is for you. You can always do a graduate diploma in law if you really like. The most important thing is that you apply to study a subject you will enjoy because if you enjoy it you will put more time and effort into it and will likely achieve better grades.

I hope this helps. If you have any further questions or anything at all please do let me know.

Hello @eshaal.s

I really resonate with how you are feeling! When I was in Year 13, I loved A-Level Law however I did not choose to study it at university level because I did not see myself as a 'law student'. I thought it might just be a bit too much and too difficult.

However, three months into studying a different degree, I regretted my decision and began the process to transfer to study law. Since then, I have not regretted it at all. It can get stressful at times, but any degree can! You learn your own methods to keep on top of everything and make it work. Furthermore, at some universities like Leicester, you also have the support of your lecturers, personal tutors and student services.

Law can be challenging but provided that you have an interest in the topic, then I would definitely recommend it. If you have any more specific questions about what it is like to study law then please ask away!

Hi Eshaal! It’s normal to feel uncertain law can be challenging, but also very rewarding if you enjoy reasoning and problem-solving. Balance and mindset matter more than myths. You’ve got this!

Hey Eshaal! Feeling overwhelmed is totally normal before starting law. It’s tough at times, but not impossible consistency and genuine interest make a huge difference. You’ll do great!
