Plymouth Dentistry 2026

I’ve been at the Plymouth Uni open day today. Talking to admissions they said that there were 168 seats, 40 for gap year/foundation and 8 for international. Several social media posts are detailing an email this evening where Plymouth say that they only have 20 spaces this year. A few posts say that they’ve been to the open day and students were told this ( this isn’t true as I was there). Anyone got any idea what’s going on?

It’s true

Also there are never 168 seats Plymouth is allowed 56 home students and last year they took too many students who now have a deferred offer which is why there are only 20 places left for 2026 entry

How was this information circulated as nothing was mentioned today?

Someone sent an email and they got that response. Do you know who you were talking to because there are never 168 seats for Plymouth dentistry, that is severally over the maximum limit the government imposes every year. Also there are no reserved seats for gap year students because that would be discriminatory towards a level applicants. I’m really confused as to who told you this information?

I went into admissions at the open day, went to the desk for dentistry, asked those questions and was given the answers I’ve mentioned.

How many students from last year already have a place? 40

How many places? 168

He then said 40 of these taken, 8 international so 120 ‘seats’ left??!! I thought the cap was 70 but as I was sitting at the dentistry admissions desk thought that they must know what they’re talking about.

Yeah this is strange because it’s false information but they’re openly talking about it. You can check online but Plymouth has never taken 168 places, maybe this was for medicine.IMG_6456.png

lol that’s so strange either they messed up in the email or they messed up on the open day. Either way it needs clarifying and it’s shocking because UCAS has been open for 1 month now and there’s 2 weeks until the deadline and people are only finding out about this today.

I agree, if the ucas had been submitted, I’d be gutted.

Did they send this email to you?

Ah, saw your earlier message and you didn’t!

Hi there! Glad you managed to visit Plymouth for an open day- I hope you enjoyed having a look round the facilities/city and listening in on some of the talks from lecturers and staff! 😊

I wouldn't know much personally about the number of spaces available for your course as I study in a different subject area, but if you have any general questions about Plymouth, feel free to reach out and I'd be happy to help 🙂 If you can't find the answers you need on here though, the admissions team's response should be the most accurate and up to date one. You can contact them on [email protected] or +441752585858 should you need any further clarification after the open day.

Best of luck with the application process! 😄

Last year they could only give out "56 places" but that didn't stop them giving out presumably 80-90!
the whole dental school applications seems a bit of farce really and with competition being so high, I think would be better if centrally controlled ?!

It changes year on year. For example one year Plymouth might give out 150 offers and 100 people receive offers elsewhere and decide not to firm Plymouth, another year they might give out 130 offers and 100 people didn’t get any offers so they all firmed Plymouth. Universities have to gamble a bit when deciding how many offers to give out. With dental school applications rising every single year and the number of places staying still, it’s becoming more common for these scenarios to occur.
