Biomedical science

I am currently in Y13, applying for university soon and I am planning to apply for biomed. My predicted grades are AAB with the B in the biology. will it put me at a disadvantage? Is it okay for me to apply to unis with AAB requirements or is it a bit of a stretch? Does anyone have recommendations on which unis? Also, i dont have much super/extracurriculars so are there any recommendations on what I should do for my personal statement

Hi;

I’m currently a trainee biomedical scientist working in the NHS. Before I carry on, I need to ask a very important question a lot of people fall into the pit of, do you want to work in the NHS? If so, please say so as applying to courses not IBMS accredited removes your ability to do that.

I don't plan on working in the NHS. If I do an IMBS accredited course, can I work elsewhere or is it a must to work in the NHS

If you wish to work in the NHS as a Biomedical Scientist, you absolutely have to have your degree accredited by the IBMS as you cannot be a BMS without accreditation on your degree. If you wish to work in the NHS though and your degree is not IBMS accredited, you can get it accredited but you will have to pay for it and this could take years of going back to uni (not funded by student finance).

Not having accreditation does not mean much though outside of diagnostics as you can work as an Associate Practitioner in the NHS, work in academics, research etc…

So it depends on what you wish to do.
Hi @crystalbooklover

Great to hear you're thinking of studying Biomedical Science - it's a fantastic field and will certainly open some exciting career opportunities for you.

I wanted to let you know that our BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree here at Southampton Solent University is 1st in the UK for teaching in biomedical sciences studies, out of 87 institutions (NSS 2025), and 1st in the UK for student satisfaction in biomedical sciences studies, out of 81 institutions (CUG 2026).

We'd love to tell you more about it at an upcoming open day where the team can chat to you in detail about entry requirements too, or feel free to ask us any questions on here and our Admissions team can advise 🙂

Wishing you all the best with your studies!
