Unaccredited Biomedical Science Degree Help.

I'm just starting Uni and I've been told today that the course is unaccredited, I wasn't told prior, it wasn't stated on the course page and I wasn't aware of the ramifications. I'm a bit freaked out, can I do anything with this degree? Will I be able to find work? Should I transfer out? Has anyone been in this position that could advise me?

Hi, trainee BMS here in the NHS. Can I ask what is it you actually want to do with the degree (the reason why you took it initially)?

IBMS accreditation allows you to work in the NHS as a BMS, without it, you cannot work as one in a diagnostic lab. I assume by the sounds of it you took the degree which a lot of people do as it was a RG uni and expected it to allow you to work in a diagnostic lab as you fell into the trap of RG uni = better?

Sadly that isn’t the case in Biomedical Science!

Doing a biomedical science degree doesn't make you a biomedical scientist. It is a protected title in the UK and you need an IBMS accredited degree for that.

There are lots of things you can do with a BMS degree that isn't being a BMS. If you don't want to be a BMS then it doesn't matter.

If you do want to be a BMS then it would be worth looking at switching ASAP.

No the Uni isn't Russell Group it's open university and I took it because I want to move into a health care role and was aiming to take a masters afterwards in nursing, dietetics etc. I was limited with my options and went remote due to family constraints (I'm a mature student). I wanted a good foundation in health care but chose biomedical science over health science because I was told it was held in higher regard.

What sort of roles can you go for with a BMS degree that isn't accredited

I'm afraid my expertise is in healthcare careers, so that's not something I would advise on. But there are lots of unaccredited universities that produce graduates every year who don't all remain unemployed.

I would look at the type of job you want and then see what degree that needs.
