Transferring Unis

Hey everyone! I know this question comes far too early, but I just wanted to ask so that I can have some peace of mind.

I have just started uni after I was forced to go through clearing by my father so that I can go to a 'better uni' after results day. My firm choice was RHUL, but after getting 4 As on results day, he told me that either I go to the uni in the north where I currently am, or I don't go to uni at all. I won't name the university I am at currently as I wouldn't want to throw them under the bus, but so far I am really not enjoying it.

My question is, for my course which is BA History, is there any way that I could transfer to another uni for my second year, and if so, which unis could I do this at? I know that this is a rather premature question and I will try and enjoy this uni before making any final decisions, but I just want to know that I have options if I decide to leave.

I am open to any suggestions, thank you!!

Hi,

You can transfer unis during any time in university however after first year it can be difficult, i would recommend ringing the unis you are looking at and ask them if they allow this/what the conditions are like.

It can be difficult for people, especially if your moving during second year but just double check which unis will allow this.

Hope this helps!

Hey,

It’s completely understandable that you’re already thinking ahead, especially since it sounds like you didn’t really get to make the final decision for yourself about where you are now. Even if you do try to settle in and give it a fair shot, it’s only natural to want peace of mind and to know your options in case things don’t improve.

Transferring between universities is definitely possible. Usually, the main thing unis will look at is how many credits you’ve completed in your first year and whether the modules you’ve taken align with theirs. Sometimes you can move straight into second year, but other times they may ask you to restart first year if the content doesn’t quite match up.

The process itself tends to involve contacting the admissions teams at the universities you’re interested in, explaining your situation, and sending over your transcripts when the time comes. Some students also reapply through UCAS during their first year with the intention of starting again elsewhere. Both routes are used, and which one works best really depends on how flexible the universities are.

If RHUL or somewhere else feels like a better fit for you, it could be worth reaching out later this year or early next year to see what their policy is on transfers. Just remember, it’s still really early days, and sometimes the first few weeks can feel the hardest before things settle down socially and academically.

You’re doing the right thing by keeping your options open, that way you won’t feel trapped, and you can make the choice that feels best for you rather than anyone else.

Good luck 😊
