Kingston University Review - Current Student

Hi everyone,

From my time on the student room, I have found that commonly asked questions about universities are ‘what is it like?’ and ‘Is it a good university?’. So, I thought I would do a review of Kingston, covering they key points.

Years Attended: 2023 - Currently

Degree: Fashion Promotion and Communication

Type of Student: Home student from Greater Manchester

Level of Study: X Undergraduate Postgraduate PhD

Academics

Class Size: 80-120

Quality of teaching: I have found the assignments that are set to be very relevant to industry. There is a good range of workshops, lectures and 1to1 tutorials. Also, a good balance of both group and independent work.

How helpful are the staff ?: They all have strong industry knowledge. Send useful emails and will get back to you quickly if you contact them and offer 1to1s.

Did you have any exciting opportunities ?: We do gallery visits, have guest lectures, work with brands, work on live projects and the opportunity to do a placement year.

Campus Life

Campus or City ?: City

What is the campus atmosphere like ?: There are 4 campuses and I am based on Knights Park which I have done a whole post about. An Overview of Knights Park Campus - The Student Room

What are your favourite parts of the social life ?: There are lost of fun student run events, especially at the student union bar. I joined the cheerleading society, the training twice a week is really fun as well as the socials one week. Also, I love being so close to central London as there is so much to do.

Facilities & Services

What is the library and study spaces like ?: There are libraries on each campus and I go between two of them. The one at Knights Park and Penrhyn Road which are both open from the morning to late at night during the week and in the day on the weekends, which is perfect for being able to do work whenever you need. Each have lots of resources, laptops to hire, macs, printers, group study rooms and have a great atmosphere that helps me concentrate.

Which facilities do you use or recommend ?: I really like the workshops facilities at Knights Park, I have so far tried printmaking and bookbinding, as well as using the photography studios. Any student can access them; you just have to do an induction.

How are the student services and support ?: There is an information centre at each library, so if you ever have any questions, you can just go to them. There is also a great health and wellbeing team that offer a range services, such as counselling and talking sessions. The careers centre is also really helpful with creating CVs, cover letters, interview prep, job search and more.

Accommodation & Living

What is the accommodation like? Halls or private

In first year, I lived in halls, here is a post on how I found it My Experience Living at Middle Mill - The Student Room

In second year, I lived in a private rented flat with friends, which I really loved. 2nd and 3rd Year Accommodation at Kingston - The Student Room

Was public transportation available and reliable?

Kingston offers a free bus from each campus and accommodation, which even stops in the town centre. However, where I stayed, I found I could walk everywhere. Plus, the I find the public transport in London reliable and easy to use.

Cost

What is the cost of living like?

Do you work part-time during studies? Was it easy to find work?

Yes! I am a student ambassador a great flexible job working for the university. It has provided me with so much valuable experience and a great income. Definitely recommend.

I hope this is helpful and if you have any questions I am happy to answer 😊
