University Reviews

Hi everyone,

From my time on the student room, I have found that commonly asked questions about universities are ‘what is it like?’ and ‘Is it a good university?’. So, I thought I would create a review template covering some of the key points. Feel free to use for your uni.

Name of University: Kingston University

Country & City: Kingston Upon Thames, Greater London

Years Attended: 2023 - Currently

Degree: Fashion Promotion and Communication

Type of Student: Home student from Greater Manchester

Level of Study: X Undergraduate Postgraduate PhD

Academics

Class Size: 80-120

Quality of teaching: I have found the assignments that are set to be very relevant to industry. There is a good range of workshops, lectures and 1to1 tutorials. Also, a good balance of both group and independent work.

How helpful are the staff ?: They all have strong industry knowledge. Send useful emails and will get back to you quickly if you contact them and offer 1to1s.

Did you have any exciting opportunities ?: We do gallery visits, have guest lectures, work with brands, work on live projects and the opportunity to do a placement year.

Campus Life

Campus or City ?: City

What is the campus atmosphere like ?: There are 4 campuses and I am based on Knights Park which I have done a whole post about. An Overview of Knights Park Campus - The Student Room

What are your favourite parts of the social life ?: There are lost of fun student run events, especially at the student union bar. I joined the cheerleading society, the training twice a week is really fun as well as the socials one week. Also, I love being so close to central London as there is so much to do.

Facilities & Services

What is the library and study spaces like ?: There are libraries on each campus and I go between two of them. The one at Knights Park and Penrhyn Road which are both open from the morning to late at night during the week and in the day on the weekends, which is perfect for being able to do work whenever you need. Each have lots of resources, laptops to hire, macs, printers, group study rooms and have a great atmosphere that helps me concentrate.

Which facilities do you use or recommend ?: I really like the workshops facilities at Knights Park, I have so far tried printmaking and bookbinding, as well as using the photography studios. Any student can access them; you just have to do an induction.

How are the student services and support ?: There is an information centre at each library, so if you ever have any questions, you can just go to them. There is also a great health and wellbeing team that offer a range services, such as counselling and talking sessions. The careers centre is also really helpful with creating CVs, cover letters, interview prep, job search and more.

Accommodation & Living

What is the accommodation like? Halls or private

In first year, I lived in halls, here is a post on how I found it My Experience Living at Middle Mill - The Student Room

In second year, I lived in a private rented flat with friends, which I really loved. 2nd and 3rd Year Accommodation at Kingston - The Student Room

Was public transportation available and reliable?

Kingston offers a free bus from each campus and accommodation, which even stops in the town centre. However, where I stayed, I found I could walk everywhere. Plus, the I find the public transport in London reliable and easy to use.

Cost

What is the cost of living like?

Here is a useful post with an overview of Monthly Spending Expenses as a Kingston Student - The Student Room

Do you work part-time during studies? Was it easy to find work?

Yes! I am a student ambassador a great flexible job working for the university. It has provided me with so much valuable experience and a great income. Definitely recommend.

I hope this is helpful and if you have any questions I am happy to answer 😊

Name of University: University of Bath

Country & City: Bath, Somerset, Southwest England

Faculties/specialisms: Faculty of Engineering and Design, School of Management, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

Academics

Quality of teaching: Excellent. Our lecturers are some of the country's leading experts in their field and relate their classes directly to their own work, with modern, practical applications. TEF Triple-Gold-rated too!

How helpful are the staff ?: Extremely. Teaching staff aside from being happy to take questions at the end of lectures, all have office hours once a week where you can drop in and ask for advice for assignments, for feedback, to sense-check your ideas etc. All the lectures I had were also very friendly and approachable 🙂

Did you have any exciting opportunities ?: Bath have one of the country's leading placement schemes - doing my year as a researcher's assistant was incredible and I even got to meet a few famous psychologists! I also got to help a couple of my lecturers with their real-world research outside my studies, got to go to schools as part of my student ambassador work and spend many a fun evening in Bath's various coffee houses with the Coffee Society!

Campus Life

Campus or City ?: Campus

What is the campus atmosphere like ?: Diverse, vibrant, friendly, lighthearted - we're quite a small uni so have the feel of a little community village where everything is close together.

What are your favourite parts of the social life ?: Sports training village where students get a free sports pass to use all the facilities, the SU which does student nights and cocktail deals every week, Baking Appreciation Society, Komedia nightclub in town, find-a-flatmate mixer events for first-years looking to find people to live with in second year, 4 West cafe's £1.50 jacket potatoes and beans, the 150+ clubs and societies available, and the ducks.

Facilities & Services

What is the library and study spaces like ?: Library is open 24/7 and is 5 floors tall - the taller you get, the quieter the working policy and so if you work well in study groups - level 2, and if you work well in silence - level 5. Fully equipped with books, printers, study pods, group tables, sofas and a database packed full of textbooks and academic journals. You can also book rooms in 8 West, the Chancellors' building and many more places for private or group study for free through the portal.

Which facilities do you use or recommend ?: Library, SU, Sports training village for the free public swimming hours, and the Virgil building in town where students can go and study off-campus in a peaceful location. I'd also recommend a picnic by our beautiful lake when its warm enough! 🙂 just mind the ducks as they may well steal your food!

How are the student services and support ?: Student wellbeing team are here to get you access to counselling and support if you need it, student money advisors can advise on budgeting and give short-term emergency loans if you're struggling, MASH are here to help you with all maths problems your course throws at you, the academic skills centre helps you improve your academic writing, the careers team do free employability coaching for both students and graduates, the ResLife team are here to help with accom issues and can even check any housing contracts for you = the support here at Bath is copious and incredible!

Accommodation & Living

What is the accommodation like? This varies based on where you are. Those on the East side of campus (Quads, Marlborough, Solsbury, Woodland Court,) and the city accommodations (Carpenter House, Centurion House, John Wood Court, Green Park House etc) are more modern than those on the West side (Westwood, Eastwood, Polden Court, Norwood) - some have ensuites, some don't and some come with catering credit pre-loaded onto your library card and some don't - its all about individual preferences and budgets. My number #1 recommendation would be Norwood due to its central location, budget-friendly price and the fact that you can get discounted SU night tickets on the first few floors due to potential noise! See and compare the options here!

Was public transportation available and reliable?

The U1, U2 and U3 buses are all very regular with a bus approximately every ten minutes in term time. See their timetables and ticket prices here!

Cost

What is the cost of living like? Unfortunately Bath and the Southwest in general is quite an expensive place to live, and so a good eye for bargains and careful budget planning are needed. That being said, there is an abundance of student accommodation and Bath is a beautiful place to live with plenty of part-time work options for students 🙂

Do you work part-time during studies? Was it easy to find work?
Yes - I was a student ambassador at uni and it was hands-down the best part of my degree! The pay was good, the job was flexible (you could sign up to shifts around your timetable) and the work was so fun. I got to meet some amazing friends from other courses and years - would 100% recommend. A friend of mine also picked up a shift in Wagamama's in town to save up some money. There are plenty of part-time work opportunities available for students - find out about more here!

Would I recommend Bath? : Yes.
Please don't let our Honourable Non-Russell Group status put you off - this means very little in the grand scheme of things and its far more important to choose a uni based on whether you like it and the course. I genuinely absolutely loved my time at Bath and would 100% recommend the uni to anyone who is interested in a course we offer.

This is a great idea so I thought I'd add Hallam on here too!

Name of University: Sheffield Hallam University

Country & City: Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

Years Attended: 2022 - Currently

Academics

Class Size: 20/25 for seminars, up to 200 for lectures.

Quality of teaching: Great, up to date teaching. The courses are constantly reviewed and modules are relevant and applied.

How helpful are the staff ?: I've had a great experience with all the staff at Hallam. They are always willing to help and will support you whenever you need it.

Did you have any exciting opportunities ?: We do lots of applied learning, so working with real life businesses or going on field trips to do case studies.

Campus Life

What are your favourite parts of the social life ?: We have loads of great societies and there is something for everyone. Our SU is always putting on fun 'give it a go' events which are great ways of trying something new and meeting lots of new people too!

Facilities & Services

What is the library and study spaces like ?: We have two great 24 hour libraries, as well as loads of social and study spaces which are great for our students. We have a moot court, labs and mock wards too! We have just opened our new buildings which are great and have loads of lovely new facilities too.

Which facilities do you use or recommend ?: I like using the library as you can get so many books out instead of buying them. I also like making the most of all the nice study spots around campus!

How are the student services and support ?: Every student has access to three teams of support; an academic advisor, a student support advisor and an employability advisor who are always there to help you out whenever you need it. They are really great and will support you with whatever you need.

Accommodation & Living

What is the accommodation like? Halls or private We have loads of great accommodation options and I stayed in halls in my first year. It was really great and all of our options are clean and modern and most have en suites too. WE can also guarantee all of our first year students a room in one of our halls too which is so reassuring!

Was public transportation available and reliable? Yes, the public transport here is great! There are loads of buses and our City campus is located right next to the train and bus stations which is great and so handy.

Cost

What is the cost of living like? I'd say Sheffield is one of the more affordable student cities. I've found it to be okay cost wise (of course it is still expensive but its affordable in relation to other cities) and there are great student offers!

Do you work part-time during studies? Was it easy to find work? Yes, I am a student ambassador which I love as it is really flexible and you get to meet lots of students too.
