I feel a bit lost

Hi, im currently 19 and will be switching uni's after my gap year. This means i will be studying again in the 25/26 year. With this comes the opportunity of switching courses. I previously studied psychology but didn't feel the interest i used to have with it hence my interest in changing paths. I have a good amount of time to think about it but im just not exactly sure on what i want to do with my studies. I'm sure there is a subject that i could study at a uni and fall in love with but i just can't seem to figure it out rn. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey,

A lot of people rush straight into uni and only realise later that they’re not actually enjoying their course, so the fact you’ve recognised that psychology isn’t where your interest lies anymore is actually a really valuable step.

This could be a good time to explore subjects in a really low-pressure way. Things like online taster courses (like free YouTube lectures) can give you a feel for what studying certain topics might actually be like. You could also look at course outlines on different uni websites, they usually list modules year by year, so you can get an idea of whether the content excites you.

Gap years are also perfect for trying out part-time jobs, volunteering, or internships in areas you might be curious about. Even if they don’t become your long-term path, the experience can help you narrow down what you don’t want to do as much as what you do.

Don’t put pressure on yourself to find the “perfect” subject straight away. Lots of people fall in love with their course once they’re in it, especially when they meet like-minded people and start to see how it connects to real-life work.

Good luck 😊

Hi there,

It's great that you are aware and willing to change your course to do something you will enjoy. Being aware and acknowledging that, is a great first step. What interests you? I would start by asking yourself that.

For me, I wasn't a 100% sure what to study, I just knew that it would be a creative course. I then did an art and design foundation course accredited by UAL at my college, which helped me realise and decide what I enjoy and want to study. It's important to do a course you enjoy as you are dedicating a lot effort and time into the course. Open days helped me a lot especially interactive tasks and ways of exploring the courses. I was able to speak to current students/lecturers about the courses, get a feel for the course/the university and so much more. I would really recommend open days if you can attend them.

Visuals also helped me a lot. I would look up courses on YouTube or social media and see what the courses look like. Often unis will have short lecturers on there or other insights into their courses. Researching the modules, entry requirements and what support is available to you at university will help. Once you know the area or courses to look into, ask yourself what else do I want form my university? Is it student support? Is it amazing facilities?

Deciding what to study and where are big decisions so it's normal to get stressed but also don't be too much pressure for yourself. You will make the right decision and with the right research you will find a course you love. You've got this! 🙂

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any further questions 🙂
Best wishes, ^Zac
