English Language GCSE and Med

I sat my GCSEs in June 2025 and these were my grades:
English language: 5
English literature: 6
Mathematics: 7
Further mathematics: 4
Combined science: 8/7
Spanish (foundation): 4
Geography: 7
Computer science: 7
Art: 8
BTEC Sport: L2M

When I initially got my GCSE results I presumed they were good enough since at that time I was more keen on neuroscience but now I’m more into med and dentistry so I did my research and found out most universities, especially Russell Group Universities, require a minimum of 6 in English language and that they don’t really consider the literature grade.

I would’ve gotten it remarked if I knew it a few days prior but now I am confused as in what to do since I can’t resit this year or get it remarked.

I could resit it in coming June but English wasn’t really ever my good subject as I consists got 4s and 5s in my mocks anyway, so I don’t have much hope that I would do good even if I resit. Some universities also accept ILETS as a replacement of GCSE and I was wondering if I would be able to get a 7.0 in ILETS if I got a 5 in GCSE?

I was hoping that I could still get into medicine or dentistry with these grades by doing exceptionally well in UCAT and extracurriculars, but I’m also looking forward for advice from uni students or experts for my situation.

Note: At the time I should start uni (sept 2027) I do not my permanent residency and therefore will be charged international fee rather than home (I get my ILR in mid 2028). So I was thinking of taking a gap year and embarking on a work experience or paid work journey during the year. If I do take a gap year is it possible that my GCSEs are less considered?
