oxford and joint honours

hey! some browsing here has showed me that supposedly MFL students get a high chance of being interviewed, as I believe it’s a less common subject. im doing German and history, so I get a possible higher chance with my German, but history is one of the most common, so would that undermine my chances of an interview that were boosted by my German? or would it just balance out and be an equal chance? my head of sixth has claimed that Oxford don’t really like joint honours (though we did get an mfl and history student last year), so my main question is would doing joint honours reduce my chances of an interview more than non-joint honours?

What are your GCSE grades and subjects? Because Oxford will be impressed with mostly 9s/8s and 7s with the odd 6 or 5.

What are your A-Level subjects and predicted grades? Because Oxford will be impressed with 3A* grades predicted too.

You can see admissions stats on each course webpage. History and MFL interview 83% of applicants so it is likely you will get an interview if you do well in the MLAT.

If Oxford “didn’t like joint honours” they wouldn’t offer courses in joint honours.

You can be considered for MFL or History sole if you apply for the joint degree (9% of applicants got a single honours offer) so you may as well apply for the joint degree if that is your preference.

GCSEs were 7s-9s with one 6 (English lit) and predicated grades are AAAA if that helps

History and Modern Languages | University of Oxford

83% of History & Modern Languages applicants are interviewed and 25% made an offer.

So, you should apply for History & German, also French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Russian are more popular than German. So, you won't be competing with as many top applicants for History & German. 🙂

Your GCSEs are excellent and you might even surpass your AAAA predicted grades on results day. 😉

The post above isn’t correct as it assumes that Oxford wants to make an equal number of offers for each language, rather than offering to the strongest candidates.

German is the least popular lanugage in state schools and even in independent schools it is not as popular as French and Spanish.

Yes and this is only relevant if Oxford had quotas as to how many places to fill for German on their joint honours course, vs History and Spanish or History and French, which the University has not suggested they do.

If you apply for History and ML you are in competition with the other candidates for History and ML, not separate sub competitions for those with French being ranked separately from those with German.
