Advice on Medicine Applications for International Student

Hello everyone,

I’m seeking some guidance on behalf of my daughter, who is an international student.

Her profile is as follows:
UCAT: 2240, Band 2 (VR 700, DM 760, QR 780)
Academics: IB student, currently on 42/42 in Year 12, predicted 45 points. HL subjects: Chemistry, Biology, and Psychology.
IGCSEs: 9 A* grades.
Experience: 5 days shadowing a GP and an ophthalmologist, plus weekly volunteering at a homeless centre.

We are wondering if this profile would be competitive enough for KCL, Glasgow, and Bristol may be tight.
As second-level options, she is also considering Manchester, QMUL, Nottingham, Birmingham.
For safer options, we are looking at Leeds, Aberdeen, and Leicester.

How realistic these choices are given her UCAT score and overall profile.

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

Glasgow, Leeds, Aberdeen, Leicester, Manchester are safe. Avoid Bristol( The UCAT cut off was 150 above 9th decile last cycle). Nottingham weighs SJT heavily in the scoring system but she may just meets the cut off. For QMUL, she would be above the cut off for 2025 but not 2024. Birmigham she would be above the UCAT cut off for 2025 &2024 but not 2023. Birmigham has the best interview to offer ratio for international student at 67%. Most other medical schools have interview to offer ratio of around 30% for international. KCL she is around the cut off for 2024.
The final UCAT decile should be out today or tomorrow. The 9th decile is likely around 2200.
I suggest that she chooses at least 3 safe options and may be one aspiration choice that she really wants to go to.
If she wants to continue her postgraduate training in UK, the medical school that she attends does not matter as the FY1 job is allocated randomly and subsequent job depends on passing the postgraduate exam and consultant references.

Your UCAT limit your choices as an international student
2010 is 7th decile. Manchester cut off was usually between 7th and 8th decile, so risky.
UEA ,QUB, KMMS,HYMS worth considering.
Aberdeen uses predicted A level+UCAT to select for interview. Only apply if you can convince your school to raise the prediction to at least A*A*A but 3A* would be better.
Plymouth only has 6 international places per year.
Also consider applying to Brunel, Buckingham, UcLan and St Mary's directly.

Thank you for your response, this made my life easier 😀
If I decide to go for one risky option (Manchester) what is you advice for the 3 remaining options.

Dear @NGKT

Thank you very much for your kind response, Its really appreciate it.

I will certainly consider Birmingham with the good Interview to offer ratio for international students. I hope her 91% decile helps. Also your comment on postgrad training in the UK put things in perspective, let try to finalise our choice and see what happens.

Thank again for your help

Now my prediction is A*A*A., Thank you for the advice.
This makes it 5 options: Aberden, QUB, KMMS, UEA and HYMS.

Did you only take 6 IGCSE? Manchester requires 7A, Liverpool looks at 9 subjects. But if your school only allowed you to take 6 subjects, you can email the medical schools to explain and be guided by their response. . You UCAT and predicted should be sufficient for Aberdeen, Dundee, QUB. Too low for Newcastle and Glasgow and probably Liverpool. Sheffield Hull & York and Manchester possibly. Also consider to apply to Brunel, Buckingham, UcLan, St Mary and Hetfordshire directly

Manchester and UEA should be ok. Sheffield difficult to predict as the UCAT cut off fluctuated quite widely in recent years. Leicester uses 50% igcse or equivalent, you have to send in the school transcripts for them to score you. If your Igcse is good, it should be sufficient. Liverpool, you are quite close to cut off for 2024.

Thanks @NGKT for the reply. Yes only 6 IGCSE.

Birmigham cut off was around the 9th decile for international students, so very risky. Cardiff scores 9 subjects and English is compulsory, again very risky. Manchester should be ok. Liverpool and Keele should be fine too. Also consider Aberdeen, St Andrew's, BSMS.
