Postgraduate student and I feel lonely.

Hello, I’m currently a postgraduate student in Durham University. I’m in Ustinov College but I can’t attend most of the morning/early afternoon events due to the nature of my schedule (9am-4pm everyday). There were some events held at night that I wanted to go to but chickened out because I would be alone and I’m quite an awkward person. I guess I’m just looking for people to talk to?

Hello, you’re absolutely not alone in feeling awkward or unsure about going to events solo. Loads of postgrads (and undergrads) feel the same way, especially in the first few weeks. The truth is, most people are just hoping someone will say hello first. And you reaching out here is already a first step to meeting other students from your course/college.

I am also a postgrad, but I live out of college this year. I find that getting involved in wider societies helps to make friends and meet new people. You often find that lots of people go to events alone at the start of the year and most people are actually in a similar position.

So, I would recommend signing up to any sports/societies that your college offers and putting yourself out there. I know it can seem scary at first, but everyone is in, or has been in, a similar situation at the start of uni. 🙂

What are you interested in? I'm a mature undergrad, had a hard time last year, but am feeling much more connected this year.
