What unis should I apply to?

Hello! I'm planning to study Law and ideally want to do so in the Midlands/North. I've written my personal statement, and I want to apply to York, Manchester and Nottingham. For my 5 options, I am thinking:
1. York - Law (AAA), Contexual (ABB)
2. York - International Human Rights Law (AAA), Contextual (ABB)
3. Manchester - Law with Politics (A*AA), Contextual (AAB)
4. Manchester - Law (A*AA), Contextual (AAB)
5. Nottingham - Law (AAA), Contextual (AAB)

For added context:
I've been a part of Access to Sheffield, but I found the city kind of dreary/grey. I've also been to Leeds and I didn't mind it. I've not done the LNAT as I didn't plan on applying to any London Unis/Oxbridge due to costs. I live the closest to Nottingham/Sheffield - being close to home is important to me, hence no Durham :frown: I have been to York and really enjoyed it, and the approach they took to teaching! However, I haven't been to Manchester nor Uni of Nottingham, but I have been to the city numerous times.

I don't have my predicted grades yet, but I think at a minimum they'll be A*A*BB and maximum A*A*AA (Law, History, English Literature and Maths). I want to apply ASAP, so any advice would be amazing!! I'm scared that not applying to five individual unis will limit my chances - please let me know!! Also, will taking International Human Rights Law at York limit me in the future rather than a typical Law degree? I believe I'll still cover the foundations of law necessary.

Thank you!!!

You say you want to apply ASAP, but I advice you to take it easy and not rush it. Whether you apply now or on the equal considerations deadline on the 15th of January makes absolutely no difference, and so make sure to take the time to consider your options and to make sure everything's ok!

The first thing that pops to mind is that you should know for sure your predicted grades, and then email York and Manchester to double-check that they welcome applications to different programmes. They probably won't mind but better to be safe than sorry. Applying to just 3 universities but 5 programmes shouldn't limit your odds. I would really go on to the open days for Manchester and Nottingham to make sure that you like them. International Human Rights Law shouldn't limit your career in law, because it's not the law degree that makes you a lawyer, it's passing the SQE that makes you a solicitor, and you don't need to have studied law to sit the SQE. So don't worry about that

Hello,

It's fantastic that you've got York on your list of places to go 😃 I've checked with a colleague and they advise you contact [email protected] so the team can advise on more precisely on the differences between courses and what you can potentially do longer term with International Human Rights.

We also have a chat platform and we usually have law students available to chat about exactly what they're doing on their courses, the careers support they receive and placements. There's no one from law on there this week but keep checking as they are on a rota so change often.

You're also very welcome to keep asking here and we'll do our best to answer your questions.

Hope to see you next September,

E.

Hey ezziex,

It's so great to hear you are interested in studying Law. These are all great university options and I'm sure you would enjoy studying at any one of them!

I understand your concerns about Sheffield but I can assure you it isn't always grey. 😆

Sheffield on a blue sky day is absolutely stunning and the green spaces are amazing. I came to Sheffield for my undergraduate degree and decided to stay on for my master's and my PhD too. The Botanical Gardens are a personal fave for me, or looking out the windows of Western Bank Library onto Weston Park. We are also sat right next to the Peak district so many of our students make use of the great public transport that takes you right into the peaks (I personally recommend going to Ladybower Reservoir!)

The Law course at Sheffield is great too! The LLB degrees satisfy the 'foundations of legal knowledge' set by the Bar Standards Board. If you plan to be a solicitor, you can also complete your Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) with the University of Law, right here at the University of Sheffield. You can also do real client work, advise start-ups and small businesses, and offer advice that can make a positive difference to the people of Sheffield, all through our many pro bono schemes.

If you would like to speak to one of our student ambassadors currently studying Law, you can do so here. Or please feel free to ask me anything about studying at Sheffield, I'm more than happy to help! 😀

Best of luck to you,
Phoebe
