Merit

Hello everyone,

So I am a person who is obsessed with good grades and I achieved them in my master’s degree.
But now I am gonna to only get 50 for my dissertation because of late submission even though I got an extension for some personal circumstances.
I am just feeling disappointed and guilty, as I am gonna graduate with merit (65).
Is it good?
Will it affect my future career?
btw I am not thinking of PHD.
Thanks

Hello there,

First of all, congratulations on completing your master’s degree—that’s a huge achievement, and you should be proud of finishing such a demanding dissertation project.

A merit is still a very strong result and won’t disadvantage you in your career. Employers value the skills, experiences, and opportunities you’ve taken up far more than whether you graduate with a merit or distinction. I’ve never come across a job description that requires a distinction at master’s level.

If you’re still worried—especially since you had an approved extension—it’s worth checking with your tutor to make sure this was taken into account. If not, you could look into an appeal.

Since you’ve put so much effort into your dissertation, you might also consider developing it further if you’re proud of the work. Some universities have student-led journals where postgraduates can share their research, or you could even explore setting something up with the support of a trusted lecturer. It can be a great way to showcase your work and feel recognised, regardless of the mark.

Most importantly, completing a master’s is a big milestone—so take some time to celebrate and treat yourself. You’ve earned it!
