leaving home or commute

Hi, I live in Worcester and have the choice of studying here or commuting to birmingham on the train. Dont think I would stay there if i only need to commute a couple days a week. I have also thought of going to other places but Im not sure if its worth it if the courses are near

Hi I do the exact same commute. It's really easy when it works, 2 or 3 stops on the 40 min train. You can buy a termly ticket that makes it about 50% cheaper too (only avail to students), the monthly pass (avail to anyone) knocks about 1/3 off the price compared to paying for tickets per journey.

Obviously you need to think about what happens when the trains are cancelled (snow, floods, engineering, etc), what's your plan b? If you can drive and have access to a car, you will be eligible for a parking permit (you live more than 10 miles from uni), parking with a permit is £3 per day. There are obviously downsides to driving into/out of the centre of Birmingham at peak times.

Without a car as plan b, what happens? Lectures are recorded but so is your attendance is recorded and if it falls below a certain point, there are issues, so you need to be attendin as much as poss. The odd transport issue will be expected and forgiven but you will need a plan b.

I have thought that would be the only problem with commuting but if i was to go somewhere else and live there then i think it would be easier but there are downsides to that as well

Also, does your course have placements? If you are based out of UoB, the catchment for placements will be local to there (same with any university you go to). So you'll need to think about how you'll manage that aspect too, if it's relevant.
There are definitely upsides to living at home and commuting, but it doesn't come without its issues 🙂

You need to work on the basis that you’ll need to be in every day in term time, rather than making plans hoping that you’ll be in less than that.

Is that better for commuting or living over somewhere else if I had to be in a lot?

How long is your commute (door to door)?
How much would commuting cost?
How much would accommodation cost?
What course are you doing?

These would be factors to consider.

Also, when looking at the financial side, remember that you get a smaller maintenance loan if you’re living with your parents.

Hey, I commute to uni and honestly it’s not that bad, it can be tiering especially if you need to get up early but nothing else is really effected! But go with what feel right for you
