Which is the best uni for counselling/ psychology course?

Hi LibertyM06!

If you prefer a smaller university with responsive and engaging lecturers, you might be interested in York St John!

We have two courses that might take your interest - Psychology:
https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/psychology/psychology-bsc-hons
and Counselling and Mental Health:
https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/counselling/counselling-and-mental-health-ba-hons
Both of these courses have high satisfaction rates, with 92% and 95% respectively.

I take Psychology and I'm currently going into my third year, and I'm loving it! The lecturers are so engaging and invested in their work, there's plenty of help available for adjustments for my assessments. We have some great equipment such as VR headsets, EEG and eye-tracking equipment. We also do some unique and interesting options for third year, such as VR studies, Mind-Mapping (different ways to study the brain), Learning and Imagination, and more! And of course, our Psychology course is BPS accredited, so you have the opportunity to register with the British Psychological Society and pursue a career as a Psychologist, be it Clinical, Counselling, or Education.

York has also been rated one of the UK's safest cities to live in and it is a fantastic place to live, full of interesting architecture and rich with history. I've loved living in York and I'll be gutted to leave when I graduate! (Also, we graduate in York's roughly 800-year old cathedral York Minster!)

If you have any questions about our courses or about living in York feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer

Good luck with your decision making!

Which is the best uni for counselling/ psychology course?

Hi there 😊

We cover both these areas here at the University of Salford which I'll tell you a little about...

BSc Psychology and Counselling
This involves studying a British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited degree, setting you up on the first step of the career ladder within the psychology and counselling fields. You would cover all the core areas of psychology and more, particularly once it comes to choosing your optional modules in third year. This would be alongside learning about the theories and approaches in counselling as well as developing your counselling skills.

I personally study BSc Psychology and Criminology at Salford and have absolutely loved the format of a dual-honours degree. To give you an idea of how the split works, you will generally be studying psychology modules about two thirds of the time and studying counselling modules about one third of the time, throughout the year.

In third year you will do dissertation, and then two psychology modules and two counselling modules which you get to choose. I'm currently studying my third year now and have loved being able to choose modules that really interest me and the chance to explore more areas, it's really kept me engaged and excited and I'm loving every minute so far ☺️

BSc Counselling and Psychotherapy: Professional Practice
I thought I'd include this too as it's still in the realm of counselling - this involves studying both counselling and psychotherapy, developing your understanding of the approaches, theories and professional development, and practicing your skills in the classroom and in professional placement. It also meets the training requirements for professional registration with the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP), and opens the progression route to individual BACP accreditation. Please note that this course is not a psychology degree but may be something to consider if you just wanted to focus on becoming a practicing counsellor and psychotherapist, rather than pursuing the psychology career route and studies alongside counselling.

I've tagged the course pages for both courses and really recommend having a good read of them both, particularly the course details and module breakdowns to see if they appeal to you 😊

If they do interest you!! I also recommend coming to one of our open days (see link), the next one is the 8th November. These were really the game changer for me when choosing a university as I could really get a feel for being on campus and then ask all my many questions to staff and students. We do also offer travel bursaries, dependent on how far you are travelling, so this is something to check out too ☀️

If you have any questions please feel free to ask, or you could also get in touch with the Course Enquiries team via the online form, email, or phone line.

All the best!

If you want to become a counsellor, the career path is convoluted and a degree in psychology might not even be necessary (but many people will have taken one anyway). For psychology courses, the best one is the one that you like best - as long as it is BPS accredited. The uni really doesn't matter so much as gaining work experience during your degree.
