Cheap weekly food shops

I’m going to break this down into three different sections:

Cheapest supermarkets

Student food banks

Making your food shop last longer.

Cheapest supermarkets

The cheapest supermarkets in Kingston to do your weekly shop at are Aldi and Lidl. No surprise there really and they are my trusted go to’s for a regular weekly shop. However, there are other supermarkets that are cheaper for certain things such as Asda, which I’ve noticed has cheaper fruit and veg and often stays fresher for longer than from shops like Aldi and Lidl. Pound land is also the cheapest place for toilet roll and cleaning products and it is conveniently opposite Aldi. Overall, noticing which shops are cheaper comes with trial and error and depends on what sort of things you are buying. The easiest way to figure out if a certain product is cheaper at one shop compared to another is to simply google it/search on their websites. But the good thing is Kingston has pretty much every supermarket available so there are many to choose from.

Student support

If you are struggling to afford your weekly food shop, there are the normal places like food banks which the university also has at Kingston hill. There is the ‘Student Pantry’ right near Kingston train station and Weatherspoon’s. This is a great place to get a weekly food shop for just £5; it’s a charity run organization held at Kings Gate church. It's open 1:30-3:15pm on Sundays in term time and anyone is welcome, I have gone there for two years, and the staff are so lovely. Just show up with your student ID and have a free tea or coffee whilst you wait.

Make your weekly food shop last longer

To make your weekly food shop last longer:

check what things can be frozen and put them in the freezer. One of the most common things I saw in student accommodation was everyone’s food going moldy before they could eat it.

Plan out your meals for the week.

Only buy what is necessary for those meals so you’re not wasting anything.

Meal prepping. It's a good idea as you can store your meals in the fridge or freezer so it’s not going bad, and it saves you time cooking every single night.

Consider buying supermarkets’ own brand products Instead of the popular more expensive ones e.g. own brand bread/biscuits/ketchup instead of Warburton’s/McVitie’s/Heinz.

Also, if you frequently buy certain items, can you bulk buy them from anywhere? This will save a lot of money in the long term.
