Should I switch A-Level subjects/Is it too late to do so?

I'm currently in year 12 and at the moment I study biology, chemistry and French. I found it really hard to decide on my A-Level subjects, however I finally went with the two sciences and a language because I thought I was sure about dentistry. I really struggle in chemistry and don't enjoy it that much, however I've always been really interested in Classical Civilisation/English Lit and I am starting to wonder if I made the wrong choice between them.
The only problem is that I think I want to go into dentistry/a medical career and two sciences are required for most universities (if not all).
First of all, I can't decide whether I should go with what I'm passionate about (despite the fact that my degree options will be narrowed down) and switch to classics/English, or whether I should continue with chemistry.
Secondly, is it too late in the year to switch? I know it will be hard to catch up on a month's A-Level work, but I am also finding chemistry really challenging and on top of that I don't feel passionate about it at all.

Its not an issue switching now as long as your school is okay with it. I dropped A level biology in October when I was in year 12 a few years ago to swap and do a btec Music, i then dropped that too and swapped to btec travel and tourism in the February of year 12 and came out with a D* in that despite being nearly 3/4s of a year behind.

That being said, if you want to do dentistry or medicine, dont drop chemistry. 1. You are going to need 2 sciences and those fields are competitive enough without you also not meeting the requirements and 2. Even if by some miracle you get into dentistry without chemistry you will STRUGGLE to understand concepts at uni without it. I know people who did biomedical science, nursing and dentistry who didnt take either biology or chemistry as one of their science subjects and they have fallen behind. My 1 biomed friend did both and still struggled with the chemistry side of her degree. Choose wisely.

Thank you so much! This is really helpful, and congrats on such good results despite having to catch up on so much content!!

hi I don't think its too late to swap at all, you've got two years left of that level so if you really don't enjoy it I recommend switching as soon as possible as its only going to get harder. I chose biology despite changing my mind about a science career early on into A levels and I regret not changing it for a more art based a level as that is what I do now at university. Is there another a level you could swap it for that would still allow you to get into dentistry that you actually enjoy. Maybe talk to your teachers about it or reach out to universities that do dentistry and ask about the a level requirements and such. Personally though, it might be worth considering another career as well, maybe something to do with classics as its always better to be happier with what you're studying than dragging yourself through it.

Hope this helps!

Im in y13 applying for dentistry, i was also really unsure about my A levels and took Physics, English Lit, Maths and Chem, but then dropped both physics and english for Biology.
It’s definitely not too late to change as i changed about late november (now predicted A*) But if you do want to do dent or med don’t change chem, why dont u change french instead?
anyway hope this helps

Hiii thank you so much for your response!! That’s definitely food for thought, I’m kinda rethinking all my options atm😭 Congratulations on your predicted grades and good luck with year 13!!

It should be ok to switch now, but double check with your 6th form. Every school has different rules on when you have to have switched by.
If you are struggling with chemistry now then id deffo switch. If you are struggling with chemistry and arent really enjoying it now, then it will only get worse.
Regarding dentistry, i know you need the sciences to get in. But is it really the career choice for you? Its only the beginning of year 12, so you still have time to think about what you want to do.

Thank you so much honestly!! I’ve been thinking about it a lot and I think I am gonna try to switch as I really just can’t fathom two more years of chemistry😭😭 thank you so much again 🫶

Like you say, its probably for the best.
And you can still do a lot of other things at uni with your subject choices if you dont do chemistry.
