Day in the life of a nursing student at Kingston University

For everyone starting a nursing degree this year and is unsure how the life of a nursing student is like, let me take you on a journey with me. I am Sarah, a second-year nursing student at Kingston University. Generally, there are three phases in the life of a nursing student; campus-based lectures, placements, and the exam period.

When I am not on placement, I am at Kingston Hill campus three days a week for the whole day attending a mix of lectures and seminars. My day starts at 9am with a quick coffee and a snack before I head to my lectures at 10. When lectures end, I usually spend some time in the library either catching up on notes, working on assignments, or prepping for upcoming seminars since I’d rather be free on the weekend. But some days I meet with my friends immediately after lectures to de-stress.

When on placement, things are a little bit different😮! My day starts a lot earlier since hospital shifts begin at 7-8AM and there’s an hour of commuting time. First, I always prep my lunch a day or two before my shift, and I make sure to also include a healthy snack since I’ll need the energy. I wake up at 5AM to prepare and head to the hospital I was assigned to. Depending on your ward, the shifts can be long (12.5 hours) but they’re packed with hands-on learning opportunities.
During placement, time management is my priority since my days get very busy. After a shift, I make sure I complete any necessary documentation on my E-pad so I don’t accumulate all the work near the end of the placement. It’s definitely intense (sometimes very tiring 🙁) but at the same time enjoyable and my day feels very productive.

And then comes the exam period once we’re done with placements and lectures. Although they give us a lot of free time to revise, there’s just so much content! So, I create a revision timetable and specify study and break hours for each day until the submission day. If it’s an exam, group studying sessions with my friends usually help me memorise better😊.

So.....if you’re a new nursing student, take it one day at a time and try to always schedule and organise your time. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, reach out to your personal tutor or student support services. You’re not alone in this journey 😊

Any fellow nursing students would like to share their day in a life or any tips?
