What course should I do within the arts?

I am currently studying fine art at a level but plan on pursuing an arts course when I go to uni next year. I just don’t know which course to select. I am thinking animation at the moment as it covers a lot of ground and has a lot of transferable skills. I am more interested and passionate about the more illustrative drawing side of the arts, but illustration courses don’t really appeal to me or I am yet to see a uni that presents it in a way that would make me consider choosing it. I would like to express my ideas and world view through my art (much like fine art) but would also like to understand the ways to communicate this world view, possibly though a narrative like animation.

Hi @Eudamus_L

Firstly I would really recommend a art and design foundation year course as you get a chance to try a whole range of mediums at a higher level. It is a great bridge from a-level to uni and gives you more time to find what you enjoy, build a portfolio, research and go to open days.

Alternatively I would recommend going to open days and going to talks for a range of courses to see what you like. Also look at the student work to see what kind of projects you will be working on. Degree shows/exhibitions are also goof for seeing student work, or looking at course Instagram's.

I hope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to ask

As above, look into a FAD course - they usually allow you to explore different media/approaches initially before specialising more, and gives you a strong platform to build a portfolio from

I completely agree with this!

I did a foundation year at my uni (year 0), allowing me to make sure I was happy in the subject I'd chosen and allowed me to explore a few avenues before reaching Year 1.

Open days are a great way to get chatting to current students about their work and experiences... or even the UniBuddy platform - we have our course specific ambassadors on there available to chat to. Also, requesting prospectuses could be good - I remember collecting about 10 or 15 before I started going to open days. You can request one of ours here.

Hope this helps,
Charlotte, Student Ambassador 🙂

Hi @Eudamus_L, I completely agree with @Kingston Grace an art foundation is definitely the best thing to do if you're unsure on what art degree to pick. If you're under 19 when you join it will be free which is a big plus. I was really unsure if I wanted to go to uni and if I did what kind of degree i'd do. Initially I was interested in illustration but my art foundation got me into animation as well. Here's a link to my blog post about my experience doing a combined degree of illustration animation at Kingston university, hopefully it'll be useful to you and give you some valuable insight into what a combined degree might look like.
