Oxford

I want to go to Oxford to study physics however my GCSE grades were not anywhere near to Oxford standards, does anyone know if this will greatly affect my chances of getting in? (also i’m studying physics, maths and sociology for my a-levels as well as an EPQ, could sociology being my third alevel also ruin my chances of getting an offer?)

You did not mention what your GCSE subjects and grades? I wonder how many 7s and above? 😧

I would strongly recommend studying A-Level Further Maths with FM1 and FM2 with Pearson Edexcel. Because Physics at Oxford is highly mathematical.

You could of course still apply to Oxford without A-Level Further Maths but be warned there is a lot of maths in Oxford Physics.

You would also need to achieve an A* grade in either Maths or Physics and AA as well.

However, if you have a 'stellar' UCAS Personal Statement and PAT score you should be shortlisted for interview. 😉

depending if you count a combined science 8-8 as 2 grades, if so, then i got 6 grades that were 7 and above as well as a Level 2 distinction in my level 2 btec.

My school unfortunately does not offer further maths due to no one else having picked it, would it be useful for me to self teach it to myself over the next two years before studying physics at uni?

thank you tho!

Your GCSEs are not the best but still above average. 🙂

Just make sure you get predicted A*AA or more.

Study hard for the PAT admissions test and you could be shortlisted with a high score.

A-Level Further Maths will feature in Year 1 of a Physics degree. So, it should be your priority for success.

Then your school can arrange tuition in F Maths for you via AMSP

https://amsp.org.uk/teachers/a-level-further-mathematics/student-tuition/

This is not expensive

I would swap sociology for FM - as per Muttley79 has signposted.

Please read Muttley79’s post - you can ask your school to refer you via AMSP.

Why Edexcel specifically?

Register for the COMPOS follow along program and ask your school to register you for the BPhO round 0

Why Edexcel specifically?
Because Pearson Edexcel has the most resources online for self studying success.

On the other hand, OCR MEI has TL Maths, which might be the best online resource out there: https://www.reddit.com/r/6thForm/comments/1nb0nq7/i_selftaught_a_level_maths_and_further_maths_in_6/

If your school doesn’t offer FM then there’s no harm (in my opinion) in having this fact mentioned in your reference:
https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showpost.php?p=100878863&postcount=62

https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/courses/course-listing/physics
However, the only essential subjects that I can see listed for the course under subject requirements are Maths and Physics.

And under Helpful:
Further Maths is helpful to candidates in completing this course, although it is not required for admission.
