Joining a sport society in second year

I am interested in joining a sport this year as I didn’t join any last year. I really want to join one this year as last year I spent a lot of time in my bedroom doing nothing so I would like to do a sport so that the same thing doesn’t happen this year. I also like the social, mental and physical aspects of doing a sport. But I’m a bit worried as the sport that I am looking at doing is trampolining which is something that I am a beginner at. I want to hear people’s experience of joining a sport that they were a beginner at in second year as I am really anxious about signing up.

Hiya lovely

That’s such a great attitude to have, i always belive in trying new things, it’s really nice that you want to get more active and social this year! It’s totally normal to feel anxious about joining a new sport, especially as a beginner, but most clubs are really welcoming to people of all levels, especially university societies.

When I joined hockey in my first year, I already had some experience from secondary school, but loads of people were complete beginners who just wanted to try something new. Everyone was friendly, and learning the sport together was a big part of the fun. Personally, I loved seeing beginners improve and fall in love with the sport as the year went on.

My friend actually joined archery in his third year as a total beginner, and he ended up finding his people really quickly he enjoys it so much that he’s even thinking about continuing it outside of uni now.

Trampolining sounds like such a fun choice, and I’m sure you’ll have a similar experience. Most clubs are really supportive and focused on helping everyone improve at their own pace, so don’t let being new put you off. Once you go to that first session, the nerves usually fade pretty quickly!

Hi!

I hope you are well! I think that is an excellent idea that you want to participate in a sport that you haven't done before! It really can be a lot sometimes to spend so much time in your room on your own and I completely understand why you would want to get out and do more things to minimise the time spent on your own.

Although I can't share any of my own experiences of doing a sport that I am a beginner at, I can encourage you and say you should definitely go for it and give it a go! You have absolutely nothing to lose by taking yourself along to the trampolining society and just enjoying yourself! Also, the more you go then the more confident you will become and the more skills you will learn. The society will have no issue with you being a beginner and will welcome you with open arms I am sure. Like you said aswell, joining a society and doing a sport has many social, mental, and physical benefits! There will be many new people for you to meet and speak to and it will be a good distraction from things such as uni work and anything else that might be stressful that is going on in your life!

I hope this response has helped slightly! I would really recommend just giving it a go and seeing how it is! Let me know if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help.

Thanks, Matt 🙂

Hey! Firstly, good on you for wanting to try something new and for putting yourself out there. I know it is not always the easiest, so you should be proud of yourself. Your anxiety regarding this is absolutely normal especially when trying something completely new.

As someone who has been in your shoes, I would say the mentality that helped me a lot was understanding that everyone was also a beginner as well at some point. And in addition to that, realising that I will always be a beginner until I try really helped me. Of course, all this is easier said than done but really appreciating the fact that no one is born being the best at certain things, it takes time and practice really helps. You said yourself that you want a different experience from your first year, and this is the best way you can go about that for sure!

I remember thinking to myself that, "Omg, if I join in second year, everyone else will be so advanced or they would have made their own friends." But imagine my (pleasant) surprise to have been warmly welcomed and to learn that other second year students had joined the same time as me! Some of our biggest worries are only really and truly in our heads - I promise.

Something else that helped me was joining with a friend. So if that is an option for you, then I highly recommend you do that because at least you will have a familiar face. And remember University sports and societies are not for experts. They are especially for people who want to learn new skills or even just meeting new people. So do not be too hard on yourself.

I really hope you go through with this, especially because trampolining sounds exciting. And if you do, I hope you have loads of fun.

Hi @Anonymous 👋

Hope you are well. That is a great idea honestly and completely fine as well. It sounds like great fun and uni societies are open to everyone honestly, it doesn't really matter whether you are a beginner or a pro and they will tell you if they do sports competitively and will just give you a schedule to ensure you join the beginner sessions 😊

I understand what you mean about your first year as I did that as well and focused on settling in first and then deciding to join societies and all! I hope you enjoy trampolining and have fun!
