Hi,
Not sure if you’re still looking for info, but here’s a bit that might help. Feel free to ask if you want to know more.
Note
: Both the Mech and EEE departments have recently restructured their courses, so I can’t speak much for the new setup, but I can share what they were like before and what’s likely similar now.
From what I know, they’ve changed to it so modules now run across both semesters, and all exams are at the end of semester 2. Before, it used to be 5 modules each semester, with exams at the end of each.
Example of before: Sem 1 - Fluid Dynamics module, Sem 2 - Thermodynamics ----> has now basically been combined into 1 larger module: ThermoFluids across sem1 &2.
Also previously, I think students from EE department were able to swap to IDE if they wanted after 2nd year. Not sure if still the case.
-------------
Yep, IDE under ME department, IMEE under EEE department.
Bath' Mech eng dept is ranked a bit higher (#5 in UK) vs EEE (#10), which probably explains the different entry reqs.
I've also found ME modules tend to be more consistent/better structured than EE modules. But both are good, with some variation depending on the lecturer and specific modules.
-------------
All Mech eng courses at bath shared the same first 2 year modules. Then they differed in later years, with differing optional and compulsory modules depending on your course.
IDE, as in the name, was more design and coursework orientated in the later years. Mix of some electrical and mechanical aspects. I believe you were able to choose if you had more mechanical/design or electrical elements, through your option choices.
IMEE - taught some ME modules and EE modules. Later years, you could choose either more electrical or more mechanical optional modules. Previously, IMEE students would share their ME modules with ME students. But looks like after the revamp, IMEE has their own dedicated ME modules shared with robotics students.
I'm personally a fan of multidisciplinary courses like IMEE & IDE. Great having both ee and me skillsets and knowing a bit of everything

Regarding placement year - great opportunity. Can get real industrial experience, and find out which fields you like/don't like. And more to put on your cv after you graduate.
Bath has some great contacts. I've seen a couple companies previously advertise some placements exclusively to bath/bristol students.
Bath has a placement team and module, with resources on cv writing and etc. You could also get your cv reviewed.
It’s still up to you to apply for roles yourself though. Think most people started applying around November-December of 2nd year, but some application deadlines were earlier or later. You could apply all throughout your second year, but earlier was probably better, since later you'd also be busy with uni deadlines & exams.
If you dont manage to find a placement, no worries - you can just continue into your next uni year.
The placement year is pass/fail (and it’s very hard to fail). You just have to make a poster about your placement, write a short report, and fill in a sort of checklist showing examples of teamwork, sustainability, etc.

Hope this was useful, and goodluck with your a levels!
