Second degree

Hi,
I am wanting to return to university to do a degree in psychology. I already achieved a BA degree but without honours in childhood studies.
Can someone tell me if it is possible to get tuition fees and maintenance loan for a 2nd degree in psychology. I was told I could but it had to be an extension course and not sure if psychology counts as an extension course.
Any help/ advice would be appreciated.

Hi There!
It's great that you are considering furthering your education.
If you want to study a course in Psychology, unfortunately you won't be able to get a student loan for another three year undergraduate degree, however, you would be able to get funding for an MSc in Psychology. This would be the next level up from an Undergraduate degree, and it will be a Masters course.
This would be a further education course and you'd have to check the course entry requirements to see if you will be eligible for the course you want to study as you have not studied Psychology as an undergraduate degree.
I'd suggest to attend some post graduate open days and speak to current students/ lecturers of the course you want to study to get further advice about studying an MSc in Psychology and how to prepare for this level of study.
I hope this helps.

Could you advise if funding would be available to me to study cognitive science?

Full-time exception courses are usually healthcare courses such as nursing, radiography, physio, etc. Psychology is considered an exception course if you study it part time. If you have a course and a university in mind, then post in the Ask SFE forum where an official SFE/SLC rep will check the course on their database to see if it is eligible for second degree funding.

You can do a MSc Psychology Conversion, there are quite a few around, lots are online but there are in person ones too . It will give you full BPS accreditation in one year. And you can get a master's loan to cover it.

Hello,

Yes you can receive full tuition fees funding and maintenance loan (amount will be assessed individually) if you do a MSc psychology course. As above, you aren’t entitled for a second tuition fee funding for BSc psychology because it’s not an exceptional course but you are entitled for MSc funding.

All the best

The advice above regarding MSc funding for psychology is incorrect. You don't receive a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan. Masters course funding is a fixed amount of £12,858. You decide how you spend it - on course fees or living costs. It doesn't go far. If your course is spread over two years, you will receive half the amount each year.
