Missed Deadline for Essay Competition - Can I still write about it in PS?

Im applying to philosophy and had written an essay for the John Locke essay comp but never sent it in, just wondering if I can still write about the experience and how I would go about wording it to make it seem beneficial and to not give me a bad look despite not sending it in.

I missed the deadline and wanted to talk about an essay I wrote on my personal statement. I instead said (and will) that I submitted it for the Royal Institute of Philosophy Essay Prize. You could do that?

You can say that you 'did some individual research' on that topic and discuss what you found out / realised, but don't mention the competition or that you missed the deadline as it'll make you look flaky and disorganised.

Thanks. Do you think I could even say I was inspired by one of the essay questions in the comp and then went on to do individual research based on it?

No, just say that you did it because it interested you. You did not enter the comp so its irrelevant and trying to explain all of that is just wasting space.
