Hi,

I’m a third-year pharmacy student, and both courses are rewarding careers, but they are very different. The best choice depends on your interests and the kind of work environment you want. Midwifery involves hands-on patient care, mainly supporting pregnant women and newborns. Pharmacy focuses on medicines, healthcare, and advising patients, with opportunities to work in hospitals, community pharmacies, or research.

Shadowing professionals in both fields, gaining work experience, or speaking to current students can also help you make a decision.

If you have any questions about pharmacy, please feel free to ask here or via UniBuddy on our course website.

For more information on both courses at LJMU:

Hope this helps,

Hi,
I can speak as a 3rd year Midwifery student both courses are vastly different the only connecting point is they both come under the realm of healthcare. The truth is neither Midwifery or pharmacy are "better" overall. It solely depends on what you want from your career, your interests and the kind of work you see yourself doing.

Midwifery
Pros:

direct, hands on care with women, babies and families

Strong emotional/rewarding element - you're part of a huge life event - pregnancy

Clear career pathway within NHS

Demand is steady

Challenges:

physically and emotionally demanding

long shifts 12.5 hr

Placement shifts as a student

Triggering situations (emergencies, safeguarding, loss)

Please look into more information in terms of both courses and map out your pros and cons for both. I have linked both courses you can have a look at the modules and expectations.

Hi

I would probably recommend midwifery to you just because of the severe shortages of staffing in all the UK maternity units. It's a really good worthwhile job but can be very hard and tiring some days as it depends on how many people are in for deliveries of there baby 🍼 🍼, you occasionally get a sort of quiet 🤫 🤫 🤫 day ( Nightshift is generally more quiet than day shifts but remember it can also be busy).

The final year student midwife in reply 2 has given you a good insight on what to expect from being a midwife. You don't really need any experience in healthcare but if you have done any experience in a healthcare setting then this will be very useful for when you do your personal statement.

Pharmacy is different and reply 1 have given you some information about it and you should follow up with researching it and then see what one you want to do.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

NHS registered band 7 senior charge nursing midwife

I'd suggest that you try and get some relevant work-experience - any sort of 'caring' experience like care-home, special-school etc, pr in a Pharmacy. They are very different careers - as above, Midwifery is hands-on and practical - and Pharmacy is Chemistry focused and more hands-off.

Useful job profiles - read carefully and think about the day-to-day reality of each job :
