Uni of Kent Class times

Do lectures at the University of Kent last for 2 whole hours?
I'm worried because I have two lectures in row from 12-14 and 14-16 and am worried if I can get to my second lecture in time. Do we have a short break to move classrooms?

I didn't study there, but usually classes do not start exactly on time and sometimes there is time needed for the lecturer to arrive and setup the teaching material, because they are also having to move from other classrooms. Other times, lecturers wait around 5 minutes for students to arrive in the classroom before they begin teaching. In my uni experience, classes ended early by a few minutes to allow us time to move to the next classroom. Don't worry about the class timings, it will be okay.

The 2 hour classes is also a normal occurrence, it just varies depending on which classrooms are available and other schedules. This is all very normal in timetables and happens often - good luck with your studies!

A (nominally) one-hour lecture typically involves 50 minutes of teaching. The timing convention varies; at some universities teaching runs xx:00 to xx:50 (e.g. a "9-10" lecture runs 09:00-09:50); at others, it's xx:05 to xx:55 (e.g. 09:05 to 09:55). This leaves 10 minutes to get between lectures.

So with your two-hour lectures, you'd still have 10 mins to get from one lecture to the next (13:50 - 14:00, or 13:55 to 14:05, depending on Kent's convention).

Incidentally, it's normal practice for a 2-hour lecture to have a 5-10 minute break approximately halfway through. Lecturers know that it's difficult to sustain concentration for 50 minutes, let alone nearly 2 hours.

Hiya!

I had a similar situation before, both my lectures were back to back, and they happened to be taught by the same lecturer, so the whole class and lecturer just walked together to the next building.

Usually, lecturers are quite understanding about this sort of thing. Often, they’ll give a short grace period of 5/10 minutes at the start, or they’ll finish a bit early to allow everyone time to get to their next class.

From my experience at DMU, lecturers are actually expected to wrap up around 10 minutes before the hour so that both students and staff can pack up and the next class can get set up. So even though your timetable shows 12-14 and 14-16, you’ll most likely have enough time to move between rooms.

If you’re ever worried about being a couple of minutes late, just explain it to your lecturer, they’re usually really understanding about it!

Hi,
Kent student here, lectures end 10 minutes before the hour which means your 12-14 lecture would end at 13 50 so you would have 10 minutes to walk to the next class. I also had back to back classes last year and the lecturers are usually understanding about these things. I had a back to back seminar from Keynes to Woolf and since my previous seminar was finishing a bit late by around 53, I was a little late for my next seminar and my seminar leader was fine with it since I was coming right from another class😊

Best wishes
