Solicitor Degree Apprenticeships... any tips?

Hey,

So, I am going to be applying to degree apprenticeships, and I have researched a ton of different law firms and looked into their websites, followed their accounts on social media, and their ratings on the Legal Cheek.

However, I am looking for any tips regarding the application process, such as how to structure answering the questions and how to research a firm properly.

Any advice or tips would be appreciated!

Thank you!

My tips....
Keep a spreadsheet of all the law firms with their opening and closing dates so you can apply to each at the right time and spread the applications out from October to April.
Then plan to apply to a couple a week so you have time to research and structure your answers to the questions.
Some firms ask the same/similar questions so you can re-use previous answers tailored to that firm so keep a word document of all your answers.
Make sure someone else with good English skills proof-checks your work before submission.
Find a personal USP to include in your application to help you stand out from the crowd.
Don't get demoralised by rejections, but consider your answers might not be "interesting" and adjust it for the next application.
Every application improves on the one before as you get more and more skilled at it, so it may take some time.
And finally, have a plan in place in case you don't succeed this year.
My son took 3 annual rounds to finally secure a SA this year. He had a University place that he deferred after the first round was unsuccessful and then got a full time job so he could apply again the following 2 years.
Hope that helps.

Thank you so much for the tips! I will definitely keep them in mind while I start my application. And also, congrats to your son for his SA!

Hello,

You are definitely on the right track with what you are doing so far! I would also recommend attending events (in person or online) - there are many of these which can help you differentiate between firms and create more tailored applications, as well as others which give you detailed guidance on the skills firms look for when hiring degree apprentices and how to write excellent applications. Some may not be advertised as being for SAs specifically, but the law firm/sector/practice area insights you can get from events targeted for training contract route applicants will be just as useful for you!

The University of Law is hosting a solicitor apprenticeship virtual fair, which focuses on application technique and allows you to network with a range of firms. The first session is on the 27th November! I would also recommend looking at AllAboutLaw and Legal Cheek for other ones. Individual law firms may also host events specifically targeted towards SAs.

Good luck!

Hi Sukhmani
I'm currently a degree apprentice myself (just finished my first year) and recently put together an e-book to support aspiring apprentices on their journey.
Below is the introductory version - explaining my mission, my background an an overview of what's included in the e-book.

If you want to talk through anything in more detail, do let me know.
Best wishes,
Louis

Hi Louis! I just had a read of your e-book, and wow! It's so helpful to see someone who's been through the process recently give advice. Thank you so much for that! I will definitely be giving it a read and hopefully the hardwork shines through at the end! Thanks again!
