White British student outnumbered at Barts?

Hi

I'm thinking of applying to Barts for medicine but I've been told it is mostly BAME students. I am white British, and wondered if it would feel isolating or if it's diverse and friendly amongst the medic students?

Probably are in the minority (albeit only slightly). Similar to most other London medical schools.

However, you would most certainly not feel isolated, and everyone will still be friendly, making it easy to make friends. The colour of peoples skin doesn’t matter, they’re still human. I understand that sometimes there may be a bit of a cultural barrier especially around religious beliefs but I’m sure there’s enough students there to find your crowd.

If you are specific about the cultural makeup of the student community, I’d suggest that you consider other medical schools like Liverpool, Surrey, Newcastle etc. London is diverse with its pros and cons.

Remember that you cannot go wrong with medical schools due to the regulations and standards. Focus on getting in and uni culture.

Why is it so important to you to be surrounded by 'White British students'.

In any medical school you will be surrounded by a very diverse group of people studying alongside you. The same applies to being in hospital, where you will be treating a hugely diverse range of people also.

One of the biggest bonuses of studying at medical school is the people you will meet. I don't know any reason why you would want to limit yourself in that.

I personally dislike terms such as 'white' and 'black'; they make me cringe inside and I rarely if ever use them. As far as I'm concerned civilisation began in Africa and that makes us all African really.

BAME is outdated; perhaps use 'ethnic minorities' instead. An aspiring doctor must know this, especially since about one in three NHS staff are from an ethnic minority background and one in five are non-British. If this is a concern, consider if this career is right for you...

As for Barts, yeah, it's very ethnically diverse, including staff, students, and patients. Also, like most London med schools, it has a large percentage of international students.
