Things to do on an Open Day

Ahead of Open Day season, I thought I'd put together a list of things you should do at an Open Day

Attend subject talks

Have a campus tour

View accommodation

Talk to current students

Explore the city!

Open Days are great for helping you decide what university you're going top apply for, but make sure you explore the city you will be studying in as well as the university itself.

Is there anything you'd recommend doing at an open day?

Go to the information fair and chat to the Admissions team. It sounds scary but Admissions people are generally very open, friendly and happy to answer any questions you have about entry requirements, the application process and the difference between different courses.

This is not an essential to-do on an open day but could be useful and reassuring if they're about!

I'd also recommend going to that information fair and visiting a few more of the stands (ensuring to come out with at least one tote bag and pen), getting lunch at a campus eatery, chatting to student ambassadors about life at that uni and if you can, chat to a lecturer from the course you'd like to do (sometimes they hang around after subject talks!)

Hey @LHU Lottie!

Some great advice here!

I would also strongly suggest talking to any course lecturers/faculty members available about the structure and modules of the course you're currently considering. For lots of prospective students, the deciding factor on whether or not you'll attend a university is the course itself: does it fit your academic needs, what are graduation prospects like, how is assessment structured, etc.

If you attend a subject talk, there should be a dedicated time for questions at the end; if not, feel free to approach the lecturer directly when they're wrapping up. In terms of course content, speaking directly to course staff is the best source of information possible - so I'd highly recommend it if you get the chance!

Most importantly of all, however, is remember to have fun. Although seeing your possible future university for the first time can feel like a big deal, remember that open days are more about exploring your options rather than making any final decisions. 🙂

Hope this helps,
Eve (Kingston Rep).

Hi Lottie! 😊

That’s a fantastic list you’ve covered so many of the key things that university open days offer! At DMU, we do a similar approach, including other aspects that we think students will benefit from most:

💬 Speaking with academics and course leaders it’s the best way to understand what your subject is really like day to day, from teaching methods to assessments and placement opportunities. You can explore our courses here: https://www.dmu.ac.uk/study/courses/courses.aspx.

🎓 Visiting our support hubs check out areas like Student Finance, DMU global and the Health and Wellbeing Centre to see what’s available to help you thrive while studying.

🌍 Exploring student societies and activities the De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU) always has something exciting going on, and it’s a great way to make friends and get involved.

📸 Taking time to picture yourself here grab a coffee by the Campus Centre, walk along the Riverside, and see how it feels to be on campus.

If the activities sound interesting enough, feel free to book our next open day on the 15th of November. We would love to see you on campus: https://www.dmu.ac.uk/study/undergraduate-study/open-days/open-days.

We can’t wait to welcome you to campus! 🎉
